Welcome to the first challenge on the brand new forum—Weekly Photo Challenge! The forum is new, but the challenges were started several months ago by Kassie. (Great idea, Kassie!)
Here's how the challenges work: Every week or two I'll start a new thread with a new photo submitted by a message board member. Then you (all interested Artists Network members, that is) create artwork based on the photo. The idea is to create and post your painting before the next week's challenge--but no-one will complain if you take a few days longer.
In fact, you're pretty free to do what you want with the challenge. Use any medium. Stick to the photo exactly or just use it as a starting point—feel free to change colors, composition, add or subtract elements or take a complete departure. Use any style from hyper-realism to abstract. Your work can even be three-dimensional. Just have fun!
When you post, remember to let us know the name of your artwork, medium and dimensions.
This week's photo, Koi with Lily Pads, was submitted by CTBarb. (To submit a photo for a future challenge, just attach it in an e-mail to me: artistsnetwork@fwmedia.com) Target date for posting your artwork is Friday, July 3.

Like this one. I was going to stick to oil for awhile, but this sings to me of watercolor. Here goes. Kathy |

Can't wait to see results! I won't be able to participate until at least September but you guys are my inspiration to get back "in the fire"! And, when I do I will need LOTS OF HELP!!! So please, please keep it going. Barbara, Nan, Priti, Kim - you were all so encouraging to me to get my brushes and easels uncovererd and operational - are you all going to participate in this one, too? I hope so! I kind of want to feed that fish!

OK so where is everyone else??? Tomorrow is the deadline. Here is my version: oil on canvas board 8" x 10" " Into the light" This was done in 1 sitting 2+ hours. had a difficult time painting the fish - so it does not look pasted on top of the water. Looking forward to seeing everyone's versions.

Thanks Holly you are very encouraging - I was having lunch and looking at it..... - did not like the 2nd fish so i re- worked the painting - without the fish and some more color, (also thought the first one looked washed out). So here is my final version.

Priti - I loved the first one 'cause every little critter needs a friend! Even without "the friend", I love your color splash! Makes me feel cheerful and smiley! Love your blog, too!! Makes me realize that I haven't given myself that commitment in years! Can't wait to get it all going again.

Priti - as always, your use of color is fabulous. And I like your composition.
I finished mine this evening. I wasn't sure how to approach this one, and I opted for a more abstract look. This is acrylic on canvas sheet, measuring approx 8 x 4. It was fun to do!
I am looking forward to seeing all the renditions. Good to have the weekly challenge back again!

| Hi Guys,
Well I probably haven't spent as much time on this as I should have but I am pretty satisfied. Painting is 9x12" in NuPastels.
Priti, I like the second one better...more green in your water, but I liked the two fish and with only one the unfortuante placement of the lower lily pad looks a little unnatural.
Nan, I like your abstract take. The water effect is really great. Perhaps you might consider brightening up some of the lily pads.
Welcome 81Art, your elaboration on this theme
is wonderful. you have captured the water very well. My only comment would be to add more orange to the yellow of the two fish that are feeding.
Great work so far...nice to have the challenges back. |

Priti - Your painting strokes look effortless in both paintings. I like your style.
Nancy - Abstract or not, it's obvious the fish is in the water. 81 Art - You certainly got your imagination going by adding more fish and two children. Very nice. Barb - I like the way you softened the fish.
Patterson - Everything is there in your painting. Just think the water needs more color. The original is 11 x 17, but I cropped it a bit. Watercolor. I spent two sessions playing with the water. I was going to put lilies on the pads, but I ran out of time. Kathy

Hi All - What a wonderful collection of interpretations and each one of them has shown me a different and/or multiple solutions or ways to solve some problems I have had in the past.
Reflections (and shadows!) in water - both light and objects - has always created a situation where I end up with a muddy mess! As I examine each of these renditions I can see and feel what I need to work on. I need to work on movement, color, and light (just to mention a few!) and not over-mixing on the canvas.
Reference photos - helpful and inhibitive at the same time for me. I tend to get too hung up on "the exact picture" when photo realism is not necessarily what my goal may be. I need to work on the basic composition then hide the photo from myself and let the creative side get to work and take over.
Hope you all try the next one - Cypress - lots of reflections and shadows. Can't wait to see how you guys see this one.
By the way, I have hauled a lot of JUNK out of my painting space - can't call it "studio" again, yet, but it's getting there. I'm excited!

Great group of paintings...where is Bill?
Patterson, I love the way you rendered the reflections and lilies. My only suggestion is that the Koi looks like it is on the same plane as the liliies...if you soften the edges, I think it will receded.
Kassie, I love your watercolor for this scene...soft and a little hazy. You have captured the shadows in the water very well. You might try blurring the edges of the Koi too.
I am thinking about our next challenge. For me a little harder...compositions in green always prove difficult for me. But I am so glad we all are doing this again. |

Hi everyone,
I posted my images and left for vacation, just came back and what a treat to see all these different versions - i am so glad so many of you posted. We are still missing a few participants - Bill, Jim and others - you know who you are....
Nancie, i love your abstract, acrylic version- the water came out very well.
81 art, you worked harder than me and it shows, excellent composition.
Barbara, I like your colors and softness and the size of your fish is correct. I also like the random dots of green (leaves).
Dp - love the passionate brush strokes, personally i tend to use more color so i find the water lacking color but that is just a style difference.
Kathy, you chose the difficult path of using watercolor, love the blue color for the water and the orange of the fish, your leaves are beautiful also, just wish that the fish was more blended.
Holland, where is your version?
Thank you to everyone who commented on mine.

I was away for the holiday weekend as well, and just logged in. What a surprise! Great to see everyone's work & everyone involved!
First - thanks all for the comments on mine. Barb, I think you are right - I'll add a bit more highlights to my abstract to make things pop a bit more. It was just a fun little painting to do.
Priti - I think already said I love your colors. Well done, both versions. 81art - what a great painting. You took the inspiration from the photo & made it your own! Barb - love your pastel work. The softness is wonderful. ddpatterson - I had a very similar color palette at first, but just had to put more blue in mine. Love your fish. Kathy - you did great with the watercolors! As always, you have very detail in place. Wonderful work!
Ok, I see we have Challenge #2 up & waiting. So I think I'll download & start something going on the new one.
