Oil on board

21X27

I've seen this guy in ads several times. My wife had a young girl crush on the WWII sailor who was to marry her aunt, and Uncle Henry was one good looking dude up until his passing last year.
This fella looks like Uncle Henry, so she's pointed him out to me several times.
I sketched him once and when I saw this foldout in the Sunday NY Times, I had to give it a try. I started with just the head but the dynamics of the arms were so tempting I tried the whole thing.

This was an ad for a shirt. I downplayed the shirt and focused more on him.
As I painted it, I was thinking of the Men's Wearhouse commercial where the bearded owner says "You'll look great, I guarantee it."

Does he?

Oh Bill , he does look great!!
I love the way you painted the shadows - the arm in the foreground and the neck. As usual your blues are a very good choice. looks like you used 2 different ones - the background color is different from the blue on his shirt.

i thnk I have a crush on him... oh, how I want to paint like this!!

my only comment is that it would be better without the brilliant blue background.

He's yummy.
It's interesting the way you've gone from your earlier monotones to full color portraits and yet your technique/style is easy to recognize as yours. Ops. I think his left hand might be too small compared to his right hand. Love it any way.

Thanks all for looking and commenting.
without the brilliant blue background

I started it with a more greyed down BG, but I couldn't get an outdoor feeling, so I decided to brighten things up a bit.
It's miore turquoise in the painting, but yes, it's bright!

Bill, I think that this would make a good shirt ad. When I look at the painting, the first thing that my eye goes to is the shirt and the last thing that my eye travels to is the face which I think is the most important part of the picture..The thoughtful expression is the main feature but it is pushed back by the brighness of the rest of the body and right hand. Just my view, but you really did a very nice job in every other respect.
