Subject: Help for hydrandeas!

This started out as an oil painting until I got some oil pastels .... I really haven't a clue what I am doing with these things.... Now that I see these pics side by side I see where there is room for lots of improvement but don't know how! For instance I love the yellow/green hues within the hydrangeas but can't seem to portray and the pic seems more airy but the painting very heavy.

Tell me what you would do!!

I haven't a clue how to help you Tami but I do like what you have done so far, it's looking lovely.
I love your colours and you have achieved very good light and shadows . My only suggestion from looking at the two photos again is perhaps you could darken the shadow among the leaves on the left side of the flowers and lighten the ones on the right .

I posted my changes thinking they were an improvement but seeing the pics together, I don't see much change. Except maybe the color may be a bit better. What do you think? Thanks, tami

The change is very subtle but I do think it makes a big difference for the better as your shadows/light are more effective now and I love the colour change and the more detailed look of the flowers .Well done.

You're doing a really good job on a difficult subject. I think, however, that by backlighting your subject you've eliminated light and shadow on the flowers. Try an overhead or side spotlight or lamp to bring out the contrasts and the colors.
Hope this throws some light on the subject.
