This afternoon I put a watercolor block in a plastic bag --- Got on my trusty Honda scooter and rode to the John Deere Trackter Co. on the outskirts of Walla Walla. This is the result.

Tom, you may be an old man (87) having painted watercolors for over 40 years.  But as you aged so have your paintings lost their appeal.  Note everyone of your paintings has no comments.  You're all done man.  But, don't give up.

The problem is --- it is obvius you don't paint from photographs like the rest of us.

I like that there is a lot of detail in this one. This painting reminds me of some of the illustrations in my childrens' storybooks. Photographs have their good and bad points. I work MUCH slower when I work from photographs....and I can't tell you how many times I have lost interest in a project and abandoned it altogether because it took too much time. I love to see work from those who paint plein air. Wish I had the time to get out and do that. And don't feel bad.....I posted a couple of drawings and no one has commented on mine yet either But life goes on and we still create!!

Thank you Vikingwife.  Unless a person lives near wheat fields they have no idea of the size of these tracters.  I'm standing by the wheel of the one I painted.

Hi Tom,
Your painting has a lot of spontiniety (ops sp). It was interesting seeing how big these tractors are.

Thank you Kassie and jimmy4u,  When I paint I try to do it fast showing lots of dynamic motion.  I picked that up after WWII when I went into Japan with the occupation forces.  While there I studied art.  In Chinese and Japanese paintings there should be spirit Chi / Kami.

Your watercolour looks immediate , just like a watercolour done "on the spot" should.

I used to like painting on location and still do, but I have had some scary experiences, so I have resorted to using photographs....not to copy them but to remind me of why I was attracted to the subject in the first place.

Thank you Mrs Willow.  My spontaneity comes from my studying painting in Japan in the late 1940's  To show a spirit (Kami) in your paintings dynamic brush strokes do the trick.
