This is wonderful, it has an etheral quality to is. I feel the movement in this one. The terrain is so alive and primal. The waves are wonderful, I love the moonlight shining through them and the splashes of moonlight shining down on the mountians. Reminds me of an old movie I saw when I was a kid, about an island surrounded in mist. The only thing I see that bothers me is that one group of dark green trees just above the waves. It keeps trying to compete for attention, it feels out of place with the rest of the painting.
Keep posting, I've enjoyed this one.

| Thank you for the kind words, Peggy. I struggled with that bush and although it tends to draw the eye, it looked empty and unbalanced over there without it. Maybe I should have just extended the rocks. Don't really know. Never had any art training and only started painting last year when I retired. But I really need and love the feedback. It is appreciated. |

| Very nice painting. You captured the moonlight very weil. However, I think the focus of the light on the wave is a little too bright. I would tone it down a little. |

I don't think it's a problem with the trees being there, they are just to crisp to fit in with the rest of the painting. It's like there's no atmosphere between them and the viewer. Why not try to put a little more haze in there to tone them down a bit and push them back behind the waves. Sometimes I wait till the painting is dry and try a thin wash of a blue grey color over it. If it doesn't work I just wipe it off. Either way the piece is wonderful and you've progressed very well in such a short time. Keep it up.

Another excellent piece! You use of shadows and moonlight
is awesome. Your flashes of color only help perpetuate the moonlight theme.
Isn't it ashame that we seem to discover gifts we have at the latter part of our lives.
I started painting when I turned fifty. Just had my 55th birthday. We'll just have to make
up for lost time. |

Wow! This is absolutely beautiful...very mystical and enchanting...I want to go there and just sit and be still while I take it all in....there is such a feeling of serenity in this piece.

Oh my that is terrific. i just recently was working on a similar scene, but yours surpassed what I had in mind. I think I shall find another subject.

In painting the nightime seascape I used both techniques, wet on wet for the sky and the water and wet over dry for the land areas. Like I said, I have no training and only do what works through trail and error. So I've found that when smooth blending is desired, the best way for me to achieve that is by painting wet on wet. And when I need to do more deliberate detailing, I find that waiting for areas to dry and then adding to them is what works best for me.
While I've read here that many painters are quite prolific and paint a painting in a day or less, most of my work takes weeks if not months. But I'm not in a hurry and being retired I only have my wife, my brushes and my golf clubs to keep me occupied. I love retirement!!! |

| Have you used liquin??? It is great for not having to wait days for areas to dry. On a hot sunny day you can actually sit the painting in the sun, it will dry quite rapidly with no harm to the canvas or paint. Aso will dry over night , and occassionally if it isn't too humid, it will dry in the house in just a few hours.... |

Scootergirl - I do use Liquin and it does work very well. But thanks for the suggestion.
I just don't paint very fast. I only paint one or maybe two hours a day and then, not every day. So my paintings take some time. |

You've got a nice painting here and like everyone else, I'm drawn to the wave but I would favor a composition that still shows some of that rugged coastline but also see a horizon line of distant ocean that also reflects the moonlight and would show some nice atmospheric perspective...I'm am inspired by your painting.

| I love painting light, also. I really like the way you painted the moonlight in both the clouds and on the hillside. I don't have any formal art training, either, so am appreciative of how far you've come on your own. Beautiful painting! |

Robert, I understand what you're saying about the horizon of distant ocean, but that would be an entirely different painting. I'm posting a new piece that does have a distant horizon.
