9 X 12" chalk on paper, 2009, by Dawna Morton. All rights reserved.
Done entirely from memory in the space of about an hour, without referencing a photo, this large magenta colored flower sits on a moody background of expressive leaf shapes. In a limited palette of green and purple, with hints of magenta, the foliage fans out around this striking flower like a burst of living flames.
I don't recall working with chalk before, I tried it out when I was at a friend's house recently and borrowed hers. It's a lot like working with charcoal only a little less messy and in color
I usually prefer working in watercolor, but actually like this dragon lily better than the watercolor one I did from memory earlier. this is more energetic and vibrant and the watercolor version is more calm and peaceful. I really like how evocative the impressionistic and slightly abstracted background of foliage turned out.
