This is done on scratchboard, but there wasn't a scratchboard catagory under the choice of mediums. Holly sugested I post my scratchboards here. This is done on a 16x20 board. For those of you not familiar with scratchboard I will give a brief discription. The board I use is an Ampersand brand clayboard. It starts with a masonite board that is covered with a ceramic clay, then it is covered with a very thin layer of black ink. Using a variety of tools, like an xacto knife, you scratch through the black ink and expose the white clay. If there is an interest I can post some close-ups for greater detail.

Beautiful details. I can't imagine having the patience to do such splendid work by scratching. Composition is perfect. A very arresting piece of art work.

Gorgeous and powerful!
Please post closeups, I've been interested in scratchboards for some time now, but have never tried one...
Thank you!

Oh, my gosh!!!! This is beyond words. She has such grace. You knew exactly how to shadow and give the silhouette with the lights and darks. Amazing. I look forward to seeing you do a lot more.

(I always look up close for technique, so I'm seeing that if you make a wrong scratch, you have to work with it - hardly any room for error. That makes this that much more incredible.)

MY GOD! I'm SPEECHLESS! I've only done scratchboard once, and it is hard! I cannot imagine the stability, patience and control you must have to do this with a knife! You are AMAZING!

Thank you Iron Brush. I think it helps to be a fan of tedium. I was always the kid you saw in the corner untangling the xmas tree lights

Thank you Valerie. The close-ups I have posted are the only ones I have made. If there is a particular part of the piece you want a close-up of let me know and I will scan the part and post it, no problem.

Can anyone here tell me why I don't get notified when there is a post to a thread I have started or I am watching. I checked the little box that says I want to be notified and yet I have never recieved an email notification.

Diana,

Incredibly beautiful!  Your work is so detailed, how long did this take you?

I looked at your websites and you are so talented I am speechless!  I was told once that the drawing and detail was the most important part of the painting process.  I have a tendency to rush through that part.  I can see why your finished pieces are so pleasing to the eye!  Wonderful work.

Thank you go4ithope.
Deb, The black and white ones take less time than the color ones. This piece took about 5 days. My work days usually are about 12 hours long.

This is incredible!!! I have never attempted scratchboard but know people who have and know thatit is very tedious and takes a llot of patience, not to mention talent and knowledge to get this kind of realism.

Hi Diana, I'm out scanning the forum and your title attracted my attention.  Your design and scratch board work is wonderful.  How do you like working with the Ampersand Clayboard?

Thank you Mike and an Artist's touch.
Peggy Scx, I love the clayboard. It scratches differently than the Essdee scraperboard, but I got used to it. I actually prefer it now.

That is truly beautiful.  I have never tried it.  Loved your image of yourself in the corner untangling the Christmas Tree lights.  Bet your family really appreciated you.  I love the contrast of the very very lights and the deep black darkness.  Very powerful presentation.  I can't imagine how you can accomplish such a thing.

The closeups made me even more appreciative.  Thanks for sharing those.

Arkansas Fran
