It's been a while since I've posted here and thought I would share my latest drawing and it's progression.

As usual, my reference photo is not great. We were travelling down the gravel road at 55 mph and snapped this one off center. My first step was to create a composition that would lend an intimacy between the two buildings. Cropping the tip off the back barn and leaving just a bit of sky created some pleasing angles.

Here is the reference photo and the cropped version

I started with the barn on the right and creating the textures, knots and grooves one board at a time. I used a combination of .5 mm mechanical pencils F and 2B. I burnished a smooth light tone over the top of the boards using 2H chisel point clutch pencil.

The darkest areas use a 2B.

My goal with this drawing is to really push the darks. I wanted to work in the darker grays on the scale. Leaving very little light areas and the white of paper left for only the highlights. I seem to find it very challenging to work this dark.

When I started this scene, I was not planning on adding the livestock. But as I progressed, I realized they could add a lot to the composition and interest.

I haven't drawn many animals, so a bit of practice was needed. I zoomed in the on the cows in the reference photo and did a quick sketch of them...

By doing the practice sketches, I quickly realized I needed some difference reference photos. So I did some internet surfing....(I love the internet!) and found a number of different poses to work from.

I also realized that by placing the three cows in the same layout as the reference photo was compositional suicide. They would have been too close to the edge of the drawing.

I used tracing paper and drew the cows in various angles and sizes and finally came up with this positioning.....

It seems that I lost some the depth between the two barns. I added a broken fence in and that seems to emphasize the break between the two buildings.

The stonework on the barn was giving me heartburn...I finally pushed the values to a darker shade and backed off of the detail in the stone. It then seems to blend in with the rest of the barn much better. This also helped to re-establish a definite space between the two buildings.

I started adding in the ground and grass.....

I first tried using a long wispy grass...but it wasn't working at all (more heartburn!) So I finally chopped it all up, made the pencil strokes much shorter and textured. This seemed to do the trick.....

and here is the final drawing... and a close-up....

ENJOY!!

Diane, what a fine job you've done!!! I loved watching the progression and reading your thought processes along the way. Your time and effort to get to this finished quality shows. You inspire me.

This is so beautiful! (As a rural Wisconsinite, I have a soft spot for barns and cows!)
A couple questions, though: what size is it, and do you use a fixative?

DWright - this was so enjoyable to look over. I have never done pencil drawing and you've gotten my interest up totally. You are absolutely great at this. I like the way you have stepped through your painting and told us how you decided on placement and problems you encountered. I really enjoyed this. Thanks
