This is a drawing I made from a photo. Graphite, pretty much the whole range from 2H to 8B. The part I dislike the most is the background, but too late to change that now - it was a Christmas present. Comments are welcome.

I love it! I chuckled as soon as I saw their faces. That's what it's all about. No need to have more in the background. Very nice work.

Mister F,
No need tobe concerned on the background, thats not what I was looking at, your work on these girls is fantastic and I give notice to the metal ride they are in, it's interesting, the hands and the baby teeth, good job. The gift was probably the best they ever received.....I bet.

How big is it? What surface did you use?

Use the pointy end............

I think its good that the background is simple keeping the eye drawn only to the subjects- the adorable girls.

Thanks for the comments everyone. What I meant about the background is that I think it would have been better being light instead of dark. Agreed that simple is a good thing.

This is very nice. I think the background is better dark because the drawing is light and it makes it stand out a little better. The only comment about the background is that it could have been a little smoother.        gbritnell

^You're right about that. A lighter colour under the dark would have smoothed out the paper and improved the look.

I've been looking at some drawings that use a blending technique with tissue paper. I didn't use that at all on this drawing and I've never used it before. I've heard blending or smudging techniques criticized before. Any input from you guys on it? I'm working on a couple new portraits now and I'd like to practice any techniques that can improve my skills.

Mister F, I have never used tissue paper but have read that quite a few people who do facial portraits do. I would think it would be kind of awkward on something small. I hadn't done a portrait in a very long time until I did the one that's currently posted as "My mechanic friend, Jim". On that I used a paper stump for just the figure. It worked ok but I would suggest practicing on the type of paper you are using because it can give some unwanted results.       gbritnell
