It's been a while since I have posted!  Here is a recent still life I just completed today.

This still life has been churning in my mind for about a year. I had to gather the objects from various sources and that was as much fun as drawing!

The coffee grinder belonged to my best friend's grandmother. I went antique shopping and found the perfect coffee pot. Fabric was purchased to represent 1890's wallpaper and I made the burlap sack and filled it with Starbuck's coffee beans. The towel is one of my mother's.

Here is the reference photo:

Enjoy!

I plan to soften the lighting a bit as the reference photo is a bit strong.

I start with the coffee grinder. Multiple layers of F .5 mm mechanical pencil with a burnish coat of 4H using a chisel point creates the worn and varnished wood of the coffee grinder. The cast iron top has an ornate decoration that captures the light.

I am using Arches Watercolor hotpress paper. It offers a much softer affect and is easy to get the darks quickly with little effort. It lends itself well to this subject matter. I usually use Strathmore Bristol smooth paper.

The coffee pot has a mottled texture to it. Multiple layers of graphite in a random stroke is used to make the texture. Crisp highlights are applied using a battery-operated eraser.

Enjoy!

I have added the burlap sack and coffee beans.

The intent of my drawings is not to include every detail of an object, but just to give an impression of it. This holds especially true to the sack and beans. I have only given the hint of threads in the sack and the beans are more texture and shade than individual beans.

Now onto the towel. The folds in the towels and the edging add interest to the bottom of the drawing. The highlights pull out the folds nicely.

Then onto the wallpaper. I have no intention of drawing the intriquit design of the wallpaper, however, just an impression of the design has been rendered. I have shaded the top corners to draw the attention right back to the coffepot and grinder.

I might make some minor changes yet, but I think I just might be done!

C&C's are welcome!

ENJOY!!

This is just wonderful Diane!! I love it when artists really take the time to put together a strong composition for a still life. This works really well. My only crit would be that I prefer the darker crisp details as shown in YOUR second WIP. I liked the strong black on the grinder and the handle of the coffee pot.....and I would love to see that throughout the picture. Just my preference. Great job!

Very nice composition and excellent drawing! It looks like I could pick up the edge of the cloth. The textures are rendered well, too. I agree with Jess - some more contrasts would make the drawing even stronger. Thanks for the progression - always fun to see how things come together.

Jess - thank you so much. I've been wanting to do a still life of a coffee grinder but couldn't find just the right combination of items. The fabric backdrop really finished it for me.

The final scanned image is a bit light and the actual drawing has more contrast.

Thanks KIM, MARGARET AND SNOWARTIST!!!

I appreciate the comments!
