I agree with Mr. Powers that drawing is its own legitmate art form, and it serves the artist to train drawing much more than just the nude figure. However I do not agree that people who attend one or even several weekly figure drawing workshops only have the goal of doing the same thing over and over and avoid backgrounds. There are always backgrounds to be drawn, and the figure in part or in whole in relationship to its background. Art is about these relationships. In the examples of Mr. Powers' work shown in the May 2007 article, what are these "backgrounds"? The figures fade off into color, or space. Show me the money.
