Nice work! What's the medium? Looks like a woodcut. Are you familiar with Albrecht Durer? He's one of my favorites

| It's very nice. It tells a story, but I'm not thinking about missionaries...I'm thinking more about Vikings ready to unlock the mysteries of the ocean, or something to that effect. I see key holes, I see the ocean, the hilly villiage, the end of the earth and the huge tree which would symbolize the building of a great ship. The scroll to document the voyage, and the man is reflecting human struggle. It's all a matter of opinion, but that's my take on what I see. It would really top it off to have some viking words across the scroll at the bottom, perhaps naming the upcoming voyage or something like that. So what's it made of, how big is it, and is it based on something or just a freehand out of imagination? |

| This is a scratchboard, which took me about 3 months to complete. The actual work is about 9.5x 7. It is actually based on an ancient woodcarving by an unknown artist and I saw great potential for it in a scratchboard. And in response to Vikingwife, I agree that there are better interpretations of the piece. The missionary interpretation was originally written across the bottom of the wood carving below the scrolls so I chose to stay with it. But I also get a sense of struggle by the man, wanting to continue on his journey but being bound to earth. |
