Hi everyone

My second try at this portrait

Jang, Myrna, Heather: Thanks again for your input - I redid the portrait using your advices and balanced them out. Here are the 2 pics again (before and after)

Better jaw line now. Still love those eyes!

Thanks Myrna:

I took better pic this time (better lighting, the portrait was not tilted as much) and of course I modified her right cheek line by covering it with hair, enlarged her left jaw line a bit and put more dark onto her hair. My wife also recommended either showing 2 or 4 teeth instead of 3 (looks more balanced) and I also blurred the line between the teeth a bit.

I like the second one much better. It seems much softer. You wife was right.....showing the 4 teeth looks better. One suggestion....(and I would ask the others' opinions here) maybe darken the eye that is hidden behind the hair a bit? Whether you choose to or not....I really like it.....and I like the detail work on the jewelry as well.

Good point Jess, that would show more depth to the eye. I am going to take your advice on this.

Thanks for your input

I agree with darkening the eye behind the hair, it is in shadow. The rest looks great now, I really like the deeper shadows in the hair. Well done.

I agree with everyone that it looks better now. Great re-do of the teeth - gives her a more natural look.

Hi Frank,
I like your drawing. If I may suggest that you keep a flat mirror handy and periodically look at your drawing by holding up the drawing to the mirror. The reflected image will exaggerate drafting errors. Leonardo da Vinci in his notes even recommended this.

Hi Leon
I have heard about this technique and did it with my animal paintings - and believe it or not , I didn't remember to do it with this drawing, it just slipped my mind - thanks for reminding me and I am going to do it from now on especially with portraits

Hi again Frank....

I usually do the "mirror check" too and it really helps my work. Also.....tried something new the other day.....I took a picture of one of my projects and downloaded it into the photo program into my computer. Once there, I played with the values, making them lighter/darker. It really helped my stippling quite a bit, showing me areas that would look better darkened. It would probably be easy to do this with pencil and charcoal drawings as well.

Hi Jess, I agree I used a sw program to adjust the lighting of the picture I took trying to match it as closely as possible to the lighting condition of the real paniting/drawing because I am such a poor photogrpaher and that's about it.The idea of changing drawing to "match" or closely to it with the modified picture is also a good idea and it appeals to me, too but I need to be careful since I have tendency to overwork a painting or a drawing quite a bit ("accident" occurs after such hard work would really be unpleasant and it actually did happen to me).

Thanks for sharing the idea.

Hello Frank and everyone else,
I am new to the group here, but I'd like to say to Frank I love the 2nd portrait also, she seems much softer and natural. I agree with the suggestion of darken area of eye under hair to give depth. I will also help the portrait appear more natural to have the shadows added in. This is overall is a excellent rendering/portrait. Oh and thanks to Leon for the new idea (for me at least) of holding pictures up to a mirror, I will definitely try that from this point on.
