Hi all....this is a pen& ink stippling of some orchids ( I think) that I am currently working on. I'm hoping that since my last picture with the dots translated okay onto this site....that this one will come out also, without looking too grainy. |

| This came out just fine. Beautiful work. Lovely values. You say you are working on it, does that mean you will add more to the composition? The left side looks a little empty, but maybe thats just me. |

Hi Heather
Yup, still working on it. The part that you are seeing is just the bottom. I haven't worked on the top or left side yet. There are still more flowers, stems and leaves to add in. I'll post it again when I'm finished. (Probably a month or so!)

I am looking forward to seeing the finished piece. Your work is excellent. I did some stippling years ago and it is demanding exacting work.
I also did it the quick way sometimes. The paper was already finely pebbled (smooth bumps not like sandpaper), and one used black crayon pencils, it produced beautiful results with a lot less work, but I have not been abe to find the paper for years now. At this time (memory hiccup) I have forgotten the name of it. |

| This is amazing to me! How do you have the patience for all of that stippling? Your results are just beautiful. Please post it when you are finished. Gene |

Thanks Gene
It definitely takes a lot of patience. I have a two year old and a four year old, so I really only have the time to do this at night. At this point.....I consider it a "good day" if I can get one petal or one leaf finished! I think I started this mid-January and I'm still plunking away at it. I HOPE to be finished by the end of this month. I'll post it then.

What is the actual size of this? I know what you mean about young children being around, brings back memories.
However, my cat is very present in presenting difficulties, she loves to play with the pastels, which of course are toxic over time, and has to date twice walked over a work in progress leaving paw prints that I have had to correct. If I shut her out of the room she just sits and howls relentlessly at the door, she is part Siamese. Just as well I am not working in pen and ink! |

Hi Heather..... It's 11" X 14". Although it's not a big work.....depending on how much shading is required, one petal can take me 2-3 hours. I have pigment liners with different size tips, but I have found that working with the smaller ones (.1 and .3 mm) give me better control and finer results.....and therefore take more time. Occasionally I also have to take a few days rest because my wrist will ache a bit. I'm really looking forward to finishing it so I can start on something else.
Thanks for the laugh this morning My in-laws have a siamese cat and I remember the first time I heard him howl.....I thought there was a baby crying in the house cause he was so loud. As for the paw prints. I've seen artwork from pet-owners who actually incorporate the "pet disasters" into their work with fun results

| Hi, I am totally new to this site, joined 2 minutes ago. I am teaching myself how to stipple. I was fascinated by your drawings, you have inspired me to continue. THANK YOU. What type of paper do you use and what type of ink pen? Your orchids are not orchids but Alstromeria, also known as Peruvian lilies. They are very beautifully done. |

Hi Dehoux......THANKS so much for the correction on the flowers. I wasn't sure what kind they were. I didn't really want to label it officially until I knew. Unfortunately, my paper is nothing special.....just some paper from my sketchbook. Looking back, I wish I had used Bainbridge Board or some better quality paper. Oh well! As for pens....I am using Staedtler pigmment liners for THIS picture. The are "permanent, lightfast, waterproof on paper, photo-safe." I usually only use the .1 and .3mm liners, but occasionally use .5mm.
I am very close (I hope) to finishing. I have a couple of leaves left to do before I post it again. Should be done in a few days. Thanks for your comments. And welcome to the forum!

Hi Jess, I'm new to the sight also and must tell you I am in awe of artists like yourself with the patience and stamina it must take for for like this. It is beautiful, and I'm sure the finished piece will be an inspiration to many.

I agree with everyone else and am eagerly awaiting the finish! How do you have the patience for stippling?
I also agree that the flowers are Alstromeria, one of my favorite flowers and you're certainly doing them justice!
