So, I'm thinking if anyone should know this it would be all of you in this forum...

What are some of the best software programs out there for manipulating and working with photos? I need something that will allow me to manipulate photos in every way possible, but simple enough that a 'not-so-savy' computer person can use .

Thanx,

Mike

Hi Mike, I'm in art school and according to them, it's Adobe Photoshop and/or Adobe Illustrator. From experience I like Adobe Photoshop. It does everything from photo manipulation to automatically rendering a drawing from a photo. You can change the file type to jpeg or numerous other extensions. You can also use it with a Wacom Digital Graphics Tablet. It's a very flexible program. CS3 is the latest version. This is just my opinion, but I know it works for just about anything you can do with a photo or a design.

Thank You!
I actually have Adobe on my computer. It is very versital and allows me to manipulate reference photos for my work in just about any manner. I like it alot but, was curious as to what else was out there that I might be missing. My computer doesn't have a place in our home but when I get my studio completed it will have a place. I'm using my better-half's computer now and her software stinks...she uses her computer for 'brainy' stuff not 'artsy' stuff so any type of creative software is non-exsitant!!!! All of my software is buried in a sea of boxes in the barn so putting it on here is a big no also. Ah, what a gonna ya do?!!
I appreciate your help,
Mike

Mike,

Photoshop is definitely the standard for photo editing. Adobe also offers Photoshop Elements as an entry-level editing package for home use and Lightroom, which is primarily aimed at professional photographers.

Other software that you might consider includes Corel Draw, which packages their Corel Paint image editing program with their vector-based Corel Draw program, which is similar to Illustrator.

Depending upon exactly what you're trying to do, you might also consider Corel Painter X, which is great either as a stand alone application or in conjunction with editing you're doing in Photoshop. If you check out Corel's website, they have free downloads that will let you try the programs out before buying.

 Hi Mike,

I use Adobe Photoshop on all my photos. I have an older version (7), but it works for me. I use the filters to enhance or recharacterize my photos into abstracts, fine art, or just enhancing an interesting photo. I use it to make my photos into pictures within pictures an so on. Here is a sample that I used on a picture of my iris blooms from last spring which I inserted into a drawing of a mirror frame. It is a good program for the beginner software editing.
