Hi Heather, I was looking for a place to insert a message about that. It's amazing timing you have. Here's what happened. What a disaster that turned out to be! It was nice in the morning at 6:00am when we were setting up, but by 10:00am it was raining like crazy. We had to cover everything. Then the wind picked up and was affecting everyone. My display stand with all my pastels and watercolors on them blew down. I lost two paintings to water damage and glass breakage. To top the day off I only sold one painting for $25.00!! Only because it was the most expensive work that a college student could afford. He just wanted original work at a price he could afford. I can respect that. The whole day was kinda surreal. When my display panel blew down, I was helped and aided by Klingons! They had their annual gathering at Super Saturday and were right across the isle from me. I would have taken pictures of the whole thing if my digital camera wasn't dead. I had left it on its charger the night before and don't understand why it didn't work. My wife was trying to take pictures and the battery was dead! My son did bring my reguar 35 mm camera so I got some photos and other people did take digital pics that I should be able to get copies of. I had a strange feeling about this venue, but I thought with a wide range of paintings, it would help. People here were interested in .50 cent rocks and hand lotion. The two other artists who were selling prints not originals were selling but not as much as they expected. There prints were in the $10 to $25 dollar range. The only other artist was one who did acrylics with sand mixed in. It was very nice work, but here paintings like mine were originals and started at $525.00. I stopped by her booth about 4:00pm and she had not sold any at that time. Angwhar from this forum did stop by the booth and told me about her rose in the watercolor section and two good things did come out of this experience. A person opening a new art gallery here in Olympia stopped by and said he would like to see my work in it, and a person starting a new artist group that does 3-d photography also invited me to join the group. I just don't think that fairs or booth type shows unless specific to the art market are a very good investment of time or effort. It was a learning experience though. Thanks for your support Heather and for asking, Jim

Wow Jim! Sorry to hear that it wasn't as successful as you had hoped. And I'm REALLY sorry to hear that two of your paintings were lost in the experience. Have to admit.....I got a little laugh at the Klingon part of the story. That's great news about the gallery and photography group!

| Jim, I ditto Jess (I laughed at the Klingon part, too). I was also wondering and was glad that Heather posed the question. After a day like that, I'm especially excited that you were contacted by the gallery and photography group. Congratulations! |

You can all look at the booth and the display we had set up before it blew down by going to this link: http://www.cowbotmedia.com/images/supersaturday/ In one of the pictures you can see a Klingon in the background. Jim

| Wow Jim, I am sorry it didn't go well, I know you went to a lot of expense and trouble to do it, and it took a lot of courage! I was very impressed with your body of work, it was very impressive, I didn't realize what a great photographer you are! Shows are tough, I don't know if I could ever do it. I was lucky, I watched my brother in law do that, and it was tough. The sad thing is that the people that go, are really lookers mostly, its their day out (not to criticize because I've done it too) but discouraging for the person who pays the fee and pays for the booth, and stands all day, etc, etc, Also, if you think about it, you really got to travel all over, because you have to reach different crowds to even have a chance... My brother in law made most of his money on the small $10 & $20 items (gifts people were buying) Maybe just prints of your work would be the best way to go, and bring a few originals in case someone was interested.... Anyway, you sure got a lot of work done! And, the gallery idea is probably going to work much better for you! Good Luck with that! |

Hi Anna, Thanks for taking the time the stop by and look at the pictures of the booth. Luckily Carol Marie and her husband stopped by and picked up "sail away" before the wall fell. Getting prints done does seem like the way to go. We'll see what happens. Hopefully the gallery. Jim

Yeah. Really too bad about the weather. Luckily you had a Klingon to help you out. The best shows for outdoor are the ones primarily for painters and crafts people. A good place to have prints done is www.imagekind.com they do the marketing and sell the prints and send you a check monthly for the commission. You upload VERY LARGE photos to their site, so they can print in various sizes.
Worth checking out. Then you can put the site on business cards and hand them out to everyone. Also you can order prints for clients and have them mailed to the clients (after you receive payment of course).
Good luck in your future ventures, don't give up. Hope the gallery works out for you too. |

Hi Jim, I took a look at the site picture of your booth and it looked like a nice display. I’m sorry to read about the troubles that you had. Outdoor venues can be chancy and I try to stay away from them. If I may I would like to give you an idea that works to a certain extent in our area. My wife and I know a number of artist in this area and when an event comes up during the year that appears that it will draw tourist into the area we will go together as a co-op (usually 8 to 10 of us) and get permission from one of the hotels to the use of a hallway for display and sale of our art. Sometimes there is a fee, sometimes not! If the event is for several days then we might rent a room opening onto the hallway for overnight storage. During the month of December we try to lease, as a co-op, space in the downtown area for a Gallery. We will have an opening show and a closing reception in which all the artists are there. Each artist then takes a daily turn at running the Gallery. I’m in one right now that started 6-22-07 and will end 7-07-07 with 12 artists participating. Leon

That sounds like and excellent venue and format for all of you. I've made contact here with several local artist about just networking. Getting together to see if we could throw around ideas on how to get out into community. I have had very limited success. The ones that are interested want to run the show, get a cut and set up according to their rules. I'll keep trying though. Thanks Leon, Jim

| That is a great idea, if you can get artists to work together in harmony, not an easy thing in my experience. |
