I did a practice painting of my 2 year old granddaughter who fell asleep waiting for Mom to go out.  I am new to acrylics and this is the first portrait I have ever done.  I am not happy with it and would appreciate some feed back on how to make it better.

This is very nice. The textures are done very well. Perspective works well. Some suggestions that might help you like it more: The girl is drawn beautifully but she almost blends in with the stairs so I'd work more on her darks and lights for contrast to make her stand out more. I'd also cross-reference the beautiful browns in the stairs more for harmony (for example, the girl's dark values could be shown with these browns). Because the girl is the focal point, I might suggest cropping the picture differently, for example showing more of the stairs above her and less of the wood floor below - I'm not sure and playing around with some thumbnail sketches of this could help you decide the best composition. Is that a real kitten or a stuffed animal? In any case, I might even leave that out as the rest of the picture would probably work very well without it. I hope this is not too much information. You have a fantastic start and with some tweaking I think you'll be very happy. For being new to acrylics I think you did a fantastic job!

Thank you for the response.  I think you are right and I just need to keep trying to see what works best.  I agree about the floor.  The stuffed kitten goes everywhere with her.  I am used to painting in oils and my blending leaves something to be desired in acrylics.  Thanks again.
