I would like to ask for advice on a painting I am working on.  It is Acrylic on a '2x3' canvas.  I have never attempted to paint such a large painting before and it is quite a challenge.  I am self-taught so each new painting is a learning experience for me.

The painting is a Southwest scene with a cowboy on his horse and their are two other horses.  It is still a work in progress and I know the horses need work, but I am trying to tone down the sky and water a little.  The sky and horses have been worked on after this picture I am posting, but the water has not.  I also have done a little more to the landscape.

Any constructive advice would be greatly appreciated!    Thank you in advance!

Leona, I like your sky. May I suggest something? Keep working on the rest of the painting and see if in the end you still want to change it. It could be that it's too strong and detracts, but you might find that it enhances. Since you're painting in acrylic and nothing too major is painted on top of the sky that would prevent you from changing it, go back and change it if need be.
As for the water, remember that it reflects the sky. Bring in the sky and you'll see a real change.

This is coming along nicely; it has a very accuate southwest feel to it. Feel free to post again before you complete it so that we can see your progression.

Hi! Leona
I like your painting just the way it is. It shows your charactor. It has depth. If you are concerned about the sharpness of the color you can soften them. I find working with acrylic that it tends to darken when dry and as it ages. I personally try to use lighter shades for that reasons. Try to think about tone instead of colors. It gives me a better perspective. Also it would depend what time of day it is in the painting and how the light is come in.
I think it good. Would love to see it when it is finished. Nice layout.

Thank you Kim and Johanna! I appreciate the advice and will post more pics as I go. It is almost finished and I do have people say they thought it looked finished already.

I have toned down the background of the sky a little and will make just a few adjusments to the water.

Last year a friend and I went on a road trip to Texas, where my nephew lives. We visited the Stockyards in Fort Worth and my photos of the Cowboys that are there helped inspire me. The sky, background, and water are things I painted out of my own memory and imagination. I love painting clouds. There are so many ways to paint them!

Well I have been sooo busy since I posted this.  I finally finished this painting and really appreciated and used the advice I got from here!  Thank you all!

Here is the finished painting.  I get so many compliments on the Cowboy in this painting.  The girls just love him!

This is really nice, I would love to see a close up that fella. Nice composition and I admire your abilitiy to size proportions, one of my weaknesses. Nice work.

Thank You!   It has been a  while since I have been here.  I will post a pic of my cowboy reference photo sometime and a close-up of the painted cowboy.

Have a Great Day!
