I usually post on the oil painting site. However, I need help with acrylics. I have been asked to paint a picture on an old violin. Can I paint directly onto the varnish? Or, should I rough up the surface and use a gesso underpainting? Please email me with your advice at:

I don't profess to be an expert, but I assume you will not want to damage the original finish. You may use trichlorehtylene to remove wax and oil from the area you want to paint, it should not dissove the varnish. The solvent is available at auto supply stores as a grease remover. Pay particular attention to the warnings on the can. You don't want a flammable solvent. Trichlor does not burn. You will want to test a small area to make sure this solvent will do what is needed.
