Hi all;

I've just finished this painting. It's of a lake in Bend, Oregon where my son lives with his family. I took the photo myself and like it enough to paint it.

The long shaded area on L side in the foreground is the shadow from a pine branch above my head. I am reluctant to paint the branch because I think there is enough vegetation already in the pic. and I like the sky the way it is- not too busy!

I plan to add two swans because there are actually swans in that lake but they weren't at where I took the photo. I want to complete this painting soon so I can start making Xmas cards.

Comments please!

Thanks very much, Jim. I've just added the original photo to compare. I am still undecided whether I should add the top branch of the pine tree to it.-Sandi

Frame it!
I has a make-believe quality to it.. a place we'd all love to see. The colors and your distinctive modelling do it, I think.
The shadow on the left helps the composition.
What size is it?

Hi Bill:
Thanks for your kind comments. It's 14" X 18" canvas panel. I am more comfortable with small and medium sizes. Have yet to do anything bigger than 20" wide. Maybe some days I will try it.
Will sign it and have it framed.

Nice painting. I think I would not have made the lines of the trees in front of the big hill or mountain in the very far background match so closely the same curvy line of the mountain. I would have varied the size of the trees to give variety to your shapes back there. Do you see what I mean? I also think that the building on the back shore of the lake looks slightly off, almost as if it is leaning forward into the lake. I think that could be corrected easily enough right now. I might sound picky, but I also think that the shapes of your reflections of the trees don't quite match the shapes of the trees. I'm looking particularly at the third tree from the right (that orange round one). Its reflection seems way off to me. That also should be easy to correct. If it were mine, I don't think I would add that pine branch on the top left. I hope I don't sound too critical, but those things hit me in the eye right away................Gene

Hi Gene:
Thanks for stopping and giving comments. I can see about the treeline following the mountain line. The big round one happens to be the tallest. I can add hight to the next two trees before the pine trees. As to the house the photo didn't show the separations between the front porch and the the main building. In effect the porch is sitting a little below the house on a different plane, as an addition to the building. There is a corner line between the two structures.
All your points are well taken. I will do neccessary corrections. No You don't sound picky. I need other eyes that can see diffferently than my own. Thanks again Gene.-Sandi

I'd just reposted the redone picture. I tried to delete the first one plus the original photo but that wasn't allowed. It kept saying "error on page", so now you can see all three in a row.
Thank you all for your encouragements, comments and suggestions.
Sandi

P.S. I filmed this redone painting in full sunlight of an early afternoon. It seems to have lost some of the color intensity when compare with the first photo that was filmed in very late afternoon. The real painting stays the same colors and intensity.

I want to walk into this painting, stand by the fence for a while, throw a rock in the lake and wave at my neighbor across the way...

I think overall the painting worked well, the only comment I would make is how the lake ends at the bottom left of the picture. Against the small green pine, its too straight a line, the water needs to cut into the tree to break up that edge, otherwise I would be really happy with this work. well done

Thanks Seaside Dreams for your nice comment. I feel lucky I saw the lake when the leaves were turning.

Hi Mariart:
Appreciate your comment and I can see your point of view. As a matter of fact, the camera didn't pick up the breaks between the branches of the little pine tree. I will have to make them more distinct which is easy to do. The top of the tree reaches up to the bottom of the magenta bushes and it's hard to see in the photo too.

beautiful scene....very nicely done...if you love bright sharp crisp colors you have nailed them....
adding a lil touch of grey, correct values, to your colors, will give you a bit calmer color..especially if your trying to push that distance a bit back further....the colors still will be clean and crisp...just a bit toned down in hue...

Thanks OWS. Will remember your advice for next time. I really wanted sharp crisp colors for this one. I think they cleansed my soul.
