This is one of the paintings I have in an exhibition in Salisbury near where I live. It was inspired by an evening sketching up on the downs back in july. It is on a wrapped canvas so it is painted around the edges. It was a beautiful evening and the mist was rising in the distance. The sun had just dropped below the horizon and it was just a wonderful light.

Another beautiful piece. Is this done using the same
technique as your first one?

this one is painted on canvas using acrylic paint, this is the medium I use most of the time. For the softer distance tones I diluted the paint down applying layers of thin paint to keep the light there.
for the flowers on the headland I first used a toothbrush to flick a fine spray of white paint over the muted green background and then painted in the more detailes flowers. This gives the impression of more detail than there really is.

This is an interesting idea, using such a fine layer of washes in the background and then it looks to me like a very textured foreground. I wish I could see this in real life. It's very nice............Gene

Hi Gene, the impression of texture in the forground is simply because there are several layers of paint. The first layer being the fine brush splattered on and the others painted on top.Actually its fairly flat. But thanks for the commenst that was the kind of effect I wanted.

if you want to see some of my other work i have a page posted on the saatchi online gallery

http://www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk/yourgallery/artist_profile/Jane+Shepherd/32198.html

the top one there was covered in lots of crumpled tissue paper before I painted it to create a very textured image.

You seem to have a nice grasp of composition. I like how you used the lone fence post to draw the eye back to the foreground. The other thing I noticed is that you like to use contrast which is also a favorite of mine when painting. Your ink paintings have that quality too. Thanks for sharing your work.

thanks Cate.I like to use the balance between light and shade that creates a sense of 3D and also distance..it makes for a more convincing image and one that your eye finds more appealing to look at i think.

thanks Jim, much as I would like to paint full time at the moment I can't sell enough to live on! There are an awful lot of artists around the area where I live in Dorset and not a massive number of people to buy their work. You also need a fair amount of money behind you to pay exhibition fees , framing etc.

You don't have to tell me about exhibition fees, framing and things of that nature.
I do work part time myself.
I think what helped me was that I was the staff artist at the "Fire Island Tide Newspaper" for almost 14yrs, so my name and art was recognizable by the time I decided to switch to fine art.
That occurred when I started getting people asking for paintings of their beach homes and boats or asking how much a particular piece of original cover art was.
After about two years of being encouraged by those request and sales, I decided I would explore the possibility of showing fine art work in galleys.
I remember the first gallery I approached in Bellport...I walked in, introduced my self and the guy literally said..."We've been wondering when you'd come in"
It was then I realized just how many people knew of me.
To this day I get off the ferry at Fire Island, I still hear "Oh look, The Artist is here!" ...to which I always reply: "My name is John, buy me a drink"
You just got to be patient, persistent and never give up.
Get your work out there to be seen, no one is going to be knocking on your front door to see your work if it's sitting in a closet.
There must be local show's and art groups where you live, join those, usually it's a small fee to join.
You need to start networking more with other artist in your area.
Find out where they show work. You may have to expand out of your area, as I have.
I live on the south shore of Long Island, no galleys here.
I show on Fire Island, north shore L.I. , eastern L.I. and now NYC.
I do maybe two outdoor shows a year...just not fond of them. Too much work for one person.
Next summer I'll be in Provincetown Ma and maybe Mystic. Con.
Where is Dorset?

I do belong to an artists group, we are called Sarum artists http://www.sarumartists.com/ the members are all ex HND fine art students from Salisbury college. we exhibit at sarum college in salisbury and this week we are hanging an exhibition in the library in salisbury. I have also had an exhibition in our local gallery in shaftesbury with my sister and a friend from college. I am also planning to take part in Dorset Art Weeks next year in a group of other local artists. because of working in a school 4 days a week exhibiting out of area is more difficult for me.But I do try to enter art competitions as well.
if you want to know where Dorset is..it is one of the southern counties (like your states but smaller!!) of England. this is a link to dorsets internet page http://www.thedorsetpage.com/Dorset_Home.htm
I looked at your website jim..I like your pictures of the dunes and fields.. very good..I can see that they would be very popular.
