Hello! This painting is not yet complete. It is a 20 x 24 on canvas. I would like some feedback before I complete it. Is there enough difference between the foreground and the background? If not any suggestions? It is a challenge with so much snow. In addition, should I add another smaller saguaro closer up in the foreground? I would appreciate any feedback. I painted this to make into my Christmas cards this year!

Hi Lucy,
This is beautiful and I think your questions/suggestions are on the mark. I love your colors and the beautiful cross-referencing of them. Differentiating the foreground from the background more with value changes would add some needed depth. I think the sky is too busy and too much like the snow and smoothing that out and perhaps lightening it would help (but don't lose that beautiful yellow towards the horizon). I like the idea of adding another saguaro in the front. But don't make it too big or it might try to take over. Beautiful work.

This is really wonderful Lucy! I agree with Michelle about the sky. There is so much going on with the mountains....that the multicolored sky takes away from them a bit. I think this will make a beautiful card

Hey, I want to use this for MY Christmas card! It's beautiful! Actually, I always paint a new painting for my card, and can't seem to get an idea for this year. I think I agree with others about the sky being too busy. But, it really is very nice.........Good luck............Gene

I like the foreground as is.

If you stand back, you'll see that there is V shaped channel running thru the foreground, thru the mid ground and thru that V in the mountains, taking the viewer right out of the picture.
Maybe something in the mid ground to stop that.
I like the sky as is.
Another western beauty, Lucy.

I agree with Michele that the background needs to be muted more. Remember that the farther away something is the less detailed and less contrast. I also agree that the forground on the right is wanting another saguaro, maybe next to the bush in the foreground. I love your sky as it is. You might want to try the other changes first and then see if the sky needs to be changed. Beautiful painting and great technique. I can't wait to see it finished!

Well I have glazed the brown of the background mountains and the darkest part of the sky slightly which does push them back some. I also have increased the values on the far right corner which seperates it more from the foreground. I sharpened the tree branches a bit over the middle ground which also pushed that back more. Now I have signed it, called it done and it is currently being photographed. Thanks for all the feedback. Lucy
