Hi all,

Thought I'd show a miniature painting recently completed titled "Orient Overcast" 8" X 10" Acrylic.

This is beautiful JM.
Where is this located. Is it really in the orient?

No Jim, this is not in the Orient.
It's the Orient Point Lighthouse on the north fork of Long Island.
You pass it when taking the Cross Sound Ferry going to New London Connecticut.
This last trip the ferry came close to it and I was able take better study photo's.
I guess the channel must have changed from a few years ago, because on the return trip we passed fairly close to it again. My friend Sharon said the same thing when she went to Mystic for the Outdoor show there.
That's Orient Point in the background...there's also a faint distance image of the Connecticut shoreline on the horizon.
While it was a clear blue day that morning, I decided to create a gray overcast image because there was so much black and white, and I like fog images.
I used an older photo of north shore cliffs in overcast to get the colors right.
You also got to remember when doing paintings in fog like conditions to remove almost all shadows.
I also like to work these with a limited pallet...almost mono chromatic.
In this case, Titanium White, Payne's Gray, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Umber, and I think a little Raw Sienna....I never write these things down.

Since the painting was only 8" x 10" I scanned it directly instead of photographing it.

Incredible work! I thought this was a photograph! The water and the lighthouse look fantastic. I love that subtle sky. Well done!!!!

JM...........This is very nice. I recently went to California and got a lot of photos up in the Santa Cruz mountains on a very misty day. I have never tried to paint that type of day, but am now inspired to give it a go. I don't do acrylics, but will try in pastel. You have inspired me. Your work is so beautiful. Thanks. Gene

Good use of atmospheric perspective, & the short staccato like strokes suggesting water & rocks are a nice contrast to the large wash of color for the sky. -Alfredo Gomez Jr.

Very nicely done! Great feel of the weather. Did you paint it on canvas or paper? It has the appearance of a watercolor.

Hi Jim,
this is beautifully done. A lovely piece. Maybe should use it for a model to make a larger painting of this scene. It would sure go nicely over a fireplace.

What a peaceful lovely work. The limited palette works very well. I love the pale yellow in the left sky. Maybe bring that a bit on the right sky and in the water, too. Also, wonder if the horizon line could be strengthened a bit and the sky a little lighter just above the water. Beautiful.

Awesome! I would really like to get closer and see how you did the water. I am working on an ocean sunset right now and need to figure out how to get the waves to look natural. You did a great job!

-Connie this is painted on canvas.

-Cate the water was very simple to do...since it was flat with no chop, I simply used the same sky colors, just adding a drop more Payne's Gray to it and maybe a drop more of Yellow Ochre by the closer shore line.
A few carefully placed squiggly lines of dark color with a highlight running next to them was all that was needed.
