This is a painting of Hal's. For those of you who don't know Hal, he is a long time member of this forum who is experiencing some computer problems at this time. He asked if I would post this painting for him. Please let Hal know what you think of his latest work. Hal is from New Jersey, but don't hold that against him.

I think this looks really good. I would like to see some darker areas added to the trees. Nice work Hal!

Hal, Nice work, I like your colors and your perspective is great! I'm from NJ, too.

Hi Jess and Jodi: Thanks for your comments, I appreciate them. Jess, if you saw the original, I believe you would agree there is enough dark areas in the trees. Also, there is more color in the trees and the stone walls than visible in this reproduction. Actually, I'm not completely finished with this, there are just a few more touch ups and my signature, then a frame for a possible showing in a local show. .
Jodi: NJ is the best place to be, no mud slides, volcanoes, earthquakes, very few history of bad hurricanes or tornadoes, winters usually mild, and summers, mainly without suffocating heat. The best beaches in the country. Can anyone top this.

Hi Jess: I took another look at my painting and decided you were right, so I added some darker areas to the trees and it helped considerably. Thanks for the critique, always good to get opinions from people who know what they are talking about.

We need to see more of your work Hal. Good stuff. Do me a favor, the next time you get out by the Jersey shore, take some pictures of the boardwalk, anywhere. I think that would be good subject matter for a painting. Email me the pictures. I would much appreciate it. If you happen to be down by Stone Harbor or Wildwood that would be even better. Thanks! | Hey, easy on the Jersey jokes Jim... lol, if you want some nice pics I can send you some too! Hal, I like your painting, the only thing i would suggest is to break up your greens and grays with other colors, because they kind of create blocks of shapes rather than separate images. .... ps I don't know about the best beaches but there are a lot of beautiful areas in NJ, too bad its so expensive and politically corrupt! Vote GRIP get rid of incumbent politicians in NJ... sorry I digress.... |

Yeah I grew up in Pennsauken NJ and moved to BC 30 years ago--no regrets! We get all you said but less people and traffic. And clean wilderness-forests and beaches! (friendly too).
About the painting, though, I agree-break up the greens-there could be lots more colours or shades and also more contrast, nice though, good luck with your show! |

Thank you Anna for the compliments on my painting, and I agree avout the politicians in NJ.Thank you too Nanci, and I know Pennsauken very well, I used to live right down the road from there. And Jim, thanks again for posting my painting and the kudos on my work. I'll try to give you some of those photos you mentioned, but don't expect them too soon. We are busier than a one-armed paper hangar.
I have taken all your advice and added somemore color to the trees, etc. Thanks

Hi JM: Thanks for the kudos on my painting. I really appreciate it, coming from an excellent artist like you. I was glad to hear that your Blue Bike picture sold, and at a good price. Tell us how to do that. I've never, won any prizes or sold any pictures. I've only ever been in two shows and they were local ones, and this picture was in the last one and didn't win anything, or get sold. I've found that they have hung my pictures in a corner that is poorly lighted and that the judge is always a watercolor expert. Then it's usually a watercolor picture that wins the prize. Then also, I've only been painting for about two years and I find that I"m competing against professionals who have been painting for 2o and 3o years. There are no different categories, like for beginners, etc. Is this true in most of the contests you've entered? |
