Of course you did this from a photo.  I have done many like this and I have learned not to do portraits from a smiling photo.  The teeth become the center of interest and detract from the subject.  I can't tell if the subject is dark skinned from the painting and I wonder about the flesh tones.

I tend to paint skin tones a little darker as a rule, so this portrait in my opinion is fantastic!
I also feel that you pulled more emotion that was evident from the photo, because great painters like yourself are passionate enough to take a photo and make the emotion more real.
I cant say enough about how you paint hair in all your work that I have seen, its just amazing to me.

Excellent work in my opinion!
