Hey JJ,
Good to see you back here. This is really nice work. I like the
play of light and how your darks suggest shapes. The only thing
That I would have liked to see is something in the vase. A waterline,
some stems. It may be to dark for it, but just a thought.

Hey Jim!  Hope things are great in Seattle.  I miss the west coast.  The ceramic vessel the flower is in is a japanese sake container, I believe..  it's an opaque dark color - and highlights play off of it in sometimes dramatic fashion.    I can see where a viewer might want transparency because we are so used to seeing  flower and vase theme.     I hadn't htought about that but it's good to hear your thought.

I'd like to see more mums in the vase! You did a great job on the flowers. If I were you, I'd eliminate that white strip on the top and side of the table. It just draws ones eye toward that area and doesn't really do anything for the painting, as far as I can see. To me, the shape of the vase is really distorted. Or maybe it was a home made pot and really looked that way. That little white glimmer on the side of the round part of the vase could be eliminated, I think. I love the shine you have on the neck of the pot, and I love the light glowing on the edges of the marigolds, too. I'm seeing something that looks like little hairs sticking up out of the top of each of the marigolds, however. I know marigolds don't have that feature. Are those brush marks? I can't quite figure it out. Maybe the photo shows them, and the painting doesn't. Sometimes the camera picks up things that we can't see with the naked eye. All in all, it's a nice painting. I'd keep it...................Gene

Hi Jim,

I agree with a previous writer that the white strip on the edge of the table should go, and I do think that only 3 mums is kind of skimpy.  The mums are well done but we need more of them.

Thanks for your comments - it seems like everyone wants more mums.   Actually these 3 flower heads fell off the original plant and instead of disposing of them I thought they looked interesting and created a contrast between the odd-shaped japanese ceramic and the flowers themselves.  I was sorta going for a subtle, non-idealized arrangement of the subject.   I agree the tape may be a bit distracting.  I wanted to include the tape as an element to make the still life get away from the traditional set ups.

I do see the hairs you;re speaking about and that right now is caused by the wipe away i did of the background.  I'll probably go in and touch that up.

Jim

I love this painting and I wouldn't touch it

Its strengths lie in your management of light in the modeling and texture of the vase and the modeling of the blooms. The colors go together beautifully.

I can see the potential for more paintings with more flowers, but you have a lovely painting here.

I have looked at this several times. I love it! I would not add anything. I am ambivalent about the white stripe. It neither offends me nor adds to the piece, it does however, draw the eye. I will leave it entirely up to you whether to change it or not. Lovely painting, well done.
