Hi all:

Here is the better and larger picture of this painting. As I explained previously, I took the pic after I applied the varnish, so the colors look like a washed-out.\

All comments are appreciated.-Sandi

Sandi, I really love the way you handled the dirt flying up from the ground. Here is a small suggestion, and I may be all wrong, but I think you have the cowboy's shoe outlined a bit too strongly. It seems to draw my eye to his shoe every time I look at the painting. I think I would soften the colors and lines in that entire leg a bit. I like the way you handled the green background area. Oftentimes a background is very difficult to decide on and I think you hit it just right, adding color and texture, without making any of that area the focal point..........Good job............Gene

Hi Sandi.....

WOW! Nice work! I agree with Gene about the shoe. And I would like to see more definition in the cowboy's face. But I think it's a powerful image and you captured it beatifully.

Thanks, Retha, Gene and Jess for the nice comments. I will rework the shoe and the leg but I've never painted over the varnish. Will the paints stick without smearing appearance? - Sandi

This is a great action piece. You can almost feel the impact. I agree about the boot but am not sure if you can paint over the varnish. Maybe just keep it in mind for the next one. Good job Sandi

No You can't paint over varnish you have to remove it,(check on the kind of varnish you used's label it would say if it is removable) and I wouldn't
it's stunning as it is...( I have just removed some and it is a big work)
Remember these notes for next time rather....

I say paint over the varnish. Maxfield Parrish did it all the time. See if it works.

And, I love the cowboy's expression. You wouldn't expect to see a grin. You've got a great one there.

Thanks bblea01. I was gone on the road the whole month of Augt. and part of Sept. When I came back, I went thru an eye surgery. Am recuperating now and just have time to check all forums.

I left the boot alone because on the painting it doesn't show that much. The photo made a trick of the eyes to see too much of a shine.

I think the cowboy grinned and grunted at the same time.

Thanks again for all the C&C

Sandi

Striking. I wonder if the blue pants would look better if less bright - especially if they are dirty denim (which looks likely from what he's doing). Fantastic job.

Thanks Michelle for your C x C.
I had to go look at the photo and the pants don't look dirty. Rodeo contest is always a big event that all cowboys and cowgirls dress up to the nine (country style). I believe this cowboy put on his new jeans. The brightness probably comes partly from the varnish and I admit that possibly also from the white paint I put on trying to show where the afternoon sunlight touched.
It was fun painting this scene.
