A friend of mine who helped me hook up my computer wanted to see if I could do a painting of a dragon for him. I found an old JRR Tolkien calender from 1977. It has a painting in it of Smaug the dragon from The Hobbit. It was done by one of the Hildbrandt brothers, Greg or Tim, I don't know which one. The painting is awesome and has a lot more detail than the reproduction I did, but please let me know what you think of it. It's 16 X 20 acrylic on canvas.

Thanks,

Jim

Jim,
I'm not familiar with this work, but you did an excellent job on the painting. I can't imagine a lot more detail!
Your friend should be very happy with it.
Did you crop part of your painting? The proportions don't look right for 16 x 20.

Hi Ron,
Thanks, yeah I cropped it to fit. Had to take some off the top and the bottom.
I feel like I'm describing what I want a barber to do.

Jim, Great job you did, I remember this from the book. I bet you could do one of your own though that would be even better!

Jim, this is very good. I agree with Anna that one of your own would be better. I know for your own enjoyment copying someone else's work is fine, but there have to be copyrights on the calendar that you copied it from. But, I guess if you aren't making money from doing this, no harm done, right? I know tons of artists spend hours copying the masters. That's a great way to learn. I take great care to use only my own photographs to do painting from as well. Then that copyright issue will never come up...........Gene

Hi Anna & Gene,
Hey thanks for your comments and concern for copyrights. The only reason I did this is because this is
what he wanted. I'm not a big fan of dragons, but it was interesting to do one. This one just had the look
and muscle tone I was looking for. It's not for sale, it was just a fun one to do for a change. I sent him an
e-mail to show him what it looked like and he was very happy with the results.
Anyway thanks again you two.

The masters are public domain. Copyright doesn't count. That's why they sell copys of masters.
A copyright is good for 50 years after the author's death.

Jim, I don't think this one is out of copyright yet its not that old, but I wasn't concerned really about copyright issues, I just love your original work more, that's all! You are so creative, and believe me I know... if you aren't into something you need a picture, and since dragons aren't real, its tough to find a photo! LOL

Jim,
This is really awsome work! I love it. I love dragons too. You have captured the power of the dragon here. Nothing to critique! I can feel the blast of his fire.

Hi Anna,
I know what you meant. I was really glad that this came out ok, never having painted a
dragon before. I don't want to make it a career though. I found some bird pictures I'd like to try in pastels.
It's kiinda fun switching back and forth between mediums.
Thanks again,
Jim

Hi Heather,
Thank you very much! This one took awhile. I want painting to be fun and relaxing not a chore.
There is a lot of detail in this but about half of the detail of the original is left out. Mostly in the surrounding
area around the dragon. That was just to much. Anyway glad to be on to patels again and see what I
can create. Oh yeah, the pets video just cracked me up. Very funny!
Thanks again!

Wonderful! Very nice. I like to play around with different kinds of pictures and I have found a few that turned out to be once in a lifetime endeavors. So I know what you mean about not wanting to make a career out of it. lol Take care- Tammy

Hi Tammy,
Thanks for stopping by. Yeah a career in dragons is not for me. Once in awhile ok, but not
for the long run.
Thanks again,
