I am trying to sell my art on blank note cards (4.25X 5.5) to local businesses, but don't know the correct price to ask for. Does anyone know the standard mark-up  for cards? Is it 3 times or more?  I had one prospect who was initially interested, but they declined once  I gave them a price. The cards cost me .50¢ and I was asking $1.10. Is that too much?

I guess a good way might be go online, search similiar items and see how much they sell. They you might have a brief idea. Remember, many stuff that sold online, espeically in ebay, are quite cheap because people are hunting for bargins. On the other hand, many artists have their own sites, and sell their works online, the prices should be fare, or a little bit above the market average.

Hope it helps.

A few years ago I made some cards and sold them for $2.50 each so my client could mark them up to $5.00 each. I quit because I couldn't keep up with the demand. They were individually sleeved in clear envelopes and I placed a label with my information, to include the retail price, on the back (I ran little return adress labels through my laser printer.) They were fun. I hope this helps.

You might be tempted to make your cards "affordable" but you want to make sure you're adequately paid for your time and that you're not undervaluing your work!

Let's say the raw materials cost you 50 cents. You can make, say, 10 cards in an hour, and you want to be paid at least $10 an hour. So we're up to $1.50 in parts and labor. Your wholesale price should be at least twice this, so you ask the store for $3 per card. They then mark it up to $6. (Retail is usually double the wholesale price.)

Might seem expensive, but you're not cheap!
