I'm thinking of just starting to paint, and I was wondering if it's ok to use royalty free images you get off sites like iStock photo to make drawings and paintings out of. Or should you make sure you take the pictures yourself? Thanks

There is no problem with using royalty free images for  learning to paint from  ,
but to be on the safe side always use your own photos for selling or entering paintings in a show .
If you have permission ( preferably written ) from the photographer to use a photo then you can sell or post your paintings in art forums and even some art shows will allow this , but most art shows insist that the ref and ideas are all your own.

If you want your work to be original and something you can take full credit for---I would advise against using stock photos. They would be good for practice, but it really isn't teaching you how to be creative and enhance your ability to create your own subject matter. Take your own photos---have some fun.

Plus, it wouldn't look good in the case someone else used the exact same photo for their art.  Things like this happen.
