At the moment the House and Senate are considering changes in the copyright laws that will do away with our ownership of our own works. Are any of you paying attention to it? The copyright office itself started the process, but it has been taken up by the Creative Commons types-the ones that want all art and photography to be free for the taking. The changes to the current laws are buried in bills addressing the difficulties experienced in using "orphaned" works-that is, photos, drawings, music, or writing the ownership of which is difficult to determine. That problem needs to be addressed, but the current laws, as written, go far beyond that purpose and, essentially, do away with copyright as we know it. This will affect not just professional photographers, artists and illustrators, but anybody who "publishes" his or her work online. Are any of you paying attention? If not, then prepare to be ripped off. Legally.

The Artist's Magazine website has an article written by intellectual properties lawyer Leonard DuBoff on the orphan works issue. If you're not familiar with the issue (and even if you are) you can get a good synopsis here: http://www.artistsnetwork.com/article/orphan-works/

there's another issue in Art in America this month on evaluating artworks and donations to musuems. |Would it be beneficial if artist organizations like oil painter of america , pastel , psa, salmagundi, etc, and art schools broke precedence and circulated a link to unite efforts for digital/e-petition...to iinvolve artists in the politics that affect their bottom line.
