I'm curious...I work full time during the week and try to paint in the evenings and the weekends.  Even this isn't enough time for me to work on my art.  Are most of you full time artists bringing in revenue that allows and justifies the time spent blogging?  I spend my lunch hour at work checking the artists forum and before I know it, the hour is up.  It seems to me that blogging would eat into a lot of an artist's time.  I would be curious to hear how you are balancing your time in the studio vs. the computer.

Hi, Kim,
My schedule goes like this...
I try and get on here before starting my day. Then through out the day, while taking a break from my artwork or a during doggie potty break (they, the three amigos, usually stay with me up in the studio), I get on and blog some more. Then at the end of the day, if I get time (after making dinner and other chores), I blog again.
I am fortunate in that I am 'semi-retired', so work outside our home doesn't interfere with my art. Now, that doesn't mean I have as much time as one might think. I also do ALL of the household chores, such as cleaning, laundry, cooking, yard maintenance ( I am really tired of shoveling snow!), errand running and all of the various remodel projects that never seem to end. My better half works a full time job ( I don't think she'll ever not work!!!.... it's just who she is) so she is the bread winner of our family. I feel very fortunate and I am very appreciative of all of what she does for us. She does however, like not having to grocery shop, having breakfast ready when she gets up, dinner ready when she gets home and not having to clean the house or pay someone for the the projct work. ;-) So, we both benefit from our situation...
Anyway, That's how it works for me.
Mike

Mike, thank you for taking the time to type a lengthy and insightful response. It sounds like you and your wife have developed a schedule that maximizes your time well. I see that you don't have a lot of time either, so do you have a handful of sites that you regularly visit? Knowing that there are so many, maybe I should think about only focusing on a few which wouldn't be so time consuming. My goal right now is to keep plugging on my art...I have so many styles that I do and would really like to narrow them down to be more cohesive. I'm working on a commission right now with another in the near future (waiting on photos), and I have at least four other projects.

You know, I just had a thought...maybe I'm fearful of using blogging as a reason to not tackle the hurdles in my art.  I can detour to reading anything art related so as to not deal with my fear of something that I'm working on that is hard. Make sense?  Blogging could turn into another way for me to procrastinate.  I'm really trying hard to be diligent and persistant, getting over the fear of the challenges brought on with each new piece. Huummm...it's amazing what you discover when you take the time to think about things.

Thanks again, Mike.

Just this one, Kim.
What you're saying does make sense. In fact, I have caught myself blogging, just to stall going up to my studio cause I've reached a difficult part of a piece...so, I guess it happens, huh?
Good luck with your artistic adventures...
Mike

Blogging does definately take a lot of my time. It is easy if you are not careful to let it eat all your time. I am just getting started with mine so there is a lot to learn, I am hoping that it will eventually take less time as I learn more about what I am doing. If I was already getting commissions for pieces, like you are I might not bother with blogging., since my whole reason for blogging is to start getting some commissioned work.

I started my blog in Oct. 2007. I was nervous at first cause I tend to be a bit private but it has really opened me up to some great feedback and making cyber friends. It has also pushed me to paint more and try harder to better my art, there's something about finishing a painting and sending it out for others to see.
I will say that it's easy to stare at beautiful artwork on blogs for too long so that's where learning to limit my time has come in handy. All in all it's been a real positive thing for me.

Working full time leaves little time to paint. To tired at night during the week to paint,
so most of my painting is done on weekends. This is the only place I visit on-line to see
other peoples work and to get advice on painting. Seems to have done well for me so far.
I never did watercolors or pastels till I joined this forum.

I read through real quick & check what everyone is painting, but don't post that often so I don't spend too much time. I too have used my whole lunch half hour reading posts, sometimes forgetting to eat until its too late! I have a full time job and I get 1 or 2 paintings done a month, but I'd really like to have time to do more. I do find having some kind of connection with other artists helps me a not feel so isolated. The area I am in is not very artist friendly and there are no artist organizations that are less than 75 minutes away. With working full time it's hard to join something that takes so long to get to. Reading and posting helps me feel like I'm not odd compared to the non-artists I know. So I feel it's worth my time, because it does help me keep going in my painting, and even the all-media challenge has encouraged me to create a painting I don't think I would have thought of doing. It would be easy to get caught up in posting, but I guess moderation is the key

All of you have mentioned good points and I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. You've given me lots to consider and I'm taking them to heart. With sincere gratitude, I thank you.
