I've had several requests now for customized drawings of peoples dogs.

I have NO IDEA what-so-ever on how to set a price.

I have recently learned that the scanning/copying can be quite costly!  So that is simple to start w/ a base line, but what about the rest?

 Any other suggestions?

Also, do you sell just the copy or is it usually matted? framed?

Completely NEW here!

Thanks, Kim

Hi- On pricing I am not a pro but do know something. Different artists have different rates and pricings guides. Many commercial artists set a price by size as opposed to time it took to do a painting. This is partly because customers can understand price by size, and cost of materials would correlate better with size than time. As they get better, they can do a painting in less time anyways by keeping to a learned format.
Add to this if you are famous or not. Famous artists , I have noticed, charge higher than average prices and even out of the range for the painting because they get allot of attention just by having a higher price. This attention also helps them sell workshops, where they may then also sell paintings This is not everyone though. I think if you do a search on eBay for paintings you will get a good idea how much to charge for paintings in your class. Lastly, the really good artists that have been around, charge middle of the road prices. Always. That is why they are able to last in the art business. Another place to find out prices are at local art league shows for members. These shows usually charge artists less than galleries to exhibit so the prices for great art is more reasonable. As for a scanner, you can get your own eventually, for a reasonible tax deductible price and scan your own images for much cheaper.
