Hi- Have a look at eBay web business- they are about 15$ a month and I saw allot of art for sale at eBay. Their pages are simple to start on and there is allot of back up info and help in having a gallery or Business- you can refer from that page to any other page you set up too. I actually made some sales through eBay .

Hello Jess,
Let me recommend PRINT SHOP WEB DESIGNER available from www.broderbund.com for $45. Buy this wonderful, easy to use web design program and they give you FREE HOSTING for a year. I also have Microsoft Front Page, which sold for @ $800 when it first came out.

PRINT SHOP is far better, easier to use and you can do almost anything your heart desires or you brain can conceive, from simple to complex. No need to learn HTML language or write code. Updating and changing your website is a breeze.

There is a “learning curve” for any design program, but PRINT SHOP is very intuitive and the tutorials are clear and easy to understand.

The Manual for FRONT PAGE printed out at 126 pages, tough for me to understand and some key information wasn’t made clear. It took me more than a week of hard work to get a website up and running. I had to pay $35 for tech support and while they were helpful and refunded my $35, FRONT PAGE is not for novices!

I built my first version of www.salestipsforartists.com using PRINT SHOP WEB DESIGNER in a few hours and can rework it anytime I want. Just finished a complete redesign and will redo the site anytime I want to freshen the look or try some new gimmick. After your first FREE year of hosting from Broderbund they will continue to host for $9.95 a month - or you can move to another ISP if you want.

There are FREE or almost Free web builders on the Internet, but most require that you use set “templates” that are very limiting, and some place Banner ads on your site.
Once you get a site up and running, the trick is driving people to your website – but that’s another story!

HI guys.....

This is current situation...... I will be participating in my town's Christmas art show next month. Each artist is required to submit two pieces of artwork to the show. In my case, I'll be putting up one of my stippling drawings and maybe a colored pencil or watercolor. The artists ARE allowed to have their portfolios, business cards, sleeved prints on display. As I am just starting out...my plan is to just put business cards with my work and see if I get any contacts that way. I want to have my own website to put on the business cards.

Here is the issue....I am not the most computer savvy person. I don't really want to get involved with extra software. I guess I'm just looking for a website host that will have basic templates for me to choose from that all I have to do is point and click. Something basic....no music, blogs, etc. I have NO idea which ones are goodand which ones are rip-offs. There are a few sites that I have seen here that were great....but some of the monthly charges were a bit high. I'm hoping that some of the artists here who have websites will let me know which hosts they have that they are happy with.

Charlie....I checked out bluevoda....it said that it is not MAC compatible??

Hi Jess,

Who is your service provider? They usually provide free websites with templates that make it easy for you to set up your own site. I started out by using the free website service at earthlink.com and quickly and easily set up my own site. You don't have to learn any new software, just follow their instructions in the template you choose. Let me know if you'd like more info.

Hi

you could try freecsstemplates.com then find yourself a hosting company, which provided you don't need to store too many photos' at once should be cheap for your first site. I use names.co.uk. Then set yourself up a way of accepting payments, a good idea being a low cost one where you can have your payments processed over the phone, accept-by-phone.com or paypal is worth a look.

Good luck

Hi all.....thanks for the advice! I signed up on godaddy.com. I am in the process of designing my site with the templates they have there. It is slow going....as I am having trouble deciding what I want the site to look like.....and I am (by trial and error) trying to figure out how to place my images. Wish me luck!!

Michelle....I tried going thru my service provider and the icon to click on for website set up kept saying "page unavaliable"! I figured this probably wasn't a good sign! And my husband has been thinking about changing service providers anyway.....so I decided to just find someone else. Some good news....I just signed up for the Seacoast Artists Association and they post a member's webpage there for only $10 per year! So I'll hopefully have two websites to give people for reference.

there are a number of sites on the web that you can put up your work for no fee...and there are a number that charge a small fee and have services that will help you create one...

so, even though you will create your own....dont neglect to create a spot on some of these other places that will display your work and get you connected as well....

To give you all a heads up—we're going to be running a story about art portfolio websites in the March 2008 issue of The Artist's Magazine! Along with some examples of great sites, we'll include seven things you need to know to get the website you want.

I do mine through Yahoo. I pay around $12 a month for what I have and to be honest, I think it's more than I need...It can hold a ton more than I'll ever put on it. I don't have counters or any of the other 'bells and whistles' but it suffices and it seems to work for me. It's very easy to do and the things you can do to your site seems to be endless!

Just my two cents...

Hi

I wondered if you had tried mrsite.co.uk ?  I am part of another forum for working at home and that's what lots of people say they use and the general consensus is that it's easy to use and you can really get that pro finish.

I've tried bluevoda.com myself and honestly didn't get on with it at all, I had trouble with their headers and things not uploading/being published so I scrapped it.

You could always get a free template and ask someone to help you alter it, that's if you know any html/css.  You then simply upload it to a web host that you've either been recommended or that you want to go with.  freecsstemplates.co.uk is one I've used.

If you need to ask any design or marketing questions then feel free.

All the best
Lou

As a new member, I recently posted a question about website success in the wrong forum. I'll learn. Just saw your question so will put my 2 cents in. I don't have the time or inclination  to design a webpage or write code.   I initially tried a website that was beautifully designed for $1000 plus a monthly charge to host. If I wanted to add a painting, etc, there was a limit and sometimes took a week or so to show up. A lovely calling card, period.  I finally found  otherpeoplespixels.com. This is not a paid plug by the way. For $150 a year you get your choice of design templates, help, mail, plenty of room, statistics on visitors and where they're f rom; you can upload photos add comments, even sell. In other words, you control the content, they do the dirty work. Last but not least, they have a sense of humor. Oh, and a biggie, they've set it up so that your images can't be copied.  The visitor statistics are interesting, people from every country in the world check you out. Nice to know for times that you're sure you're twisting in the wind.

I've been using Microsoft Office Live. It's really easy to use and is FREE (although you are able to upgrade and do sales online for a minimal fee.) If you go to my website, you can click on the logo on the bottom right hand corner. It will also give you an idea of what you are able to do with it.

If you wanted to set up a site to sell your art on, I also recomment Etsy.com. I think it's beautifully put together with lots of catchy features. You do need to be proactive to get the most from it, but if you set up a hyperlink from your website to your Etsy site, then you can direct people already interested to view available pieces. The online resources in their Etsy Labs are also a real treat!

I hope this helps to anyone who may be interested!

Hi, I set up my "Portfolio" using Blogger and then paid $10 for the year for a Domain Name from Google. I found it much easier to post my paintings and copy. Check it out and if I can be of help let me know.

Here are two sites I use and are free and you do not need a degree to set up a website.
www.mosaicglobe.com and www.asingularcreation.com I like both and use both for my art displays.

Mosaicglobe uses templates and are easy to use. You get to pick a name for your website and then add mosaicglobe.com
A Singular Creation uses a general Gallery.
Here is my site www.attentiongetters.mosaicglobe.com

Good Luck finding a site.
