how do you handle getting started in the art business and online safety? I was recently reading up on it and they really stronlgy reccommend NOT putting your peronal phone number address and even your real name out on the web ( to avoid having some whacko showing up at your home and nabbing your kids or something) I could get a post office box, but i'm just getting started and do'nt have the funds to do it yet. I got a bunch of free business cards printed up this summer and did face painting at the local market-- so far i'm $20.00 ahead of where i started, but that's not even enough to come close to buying one frame for any of my stuff to make it suitable for public display.(which was my end goal for the summer) I did pass out the cards -with my home address and phone number- to quite a few people. and also signed up for image kind to sell prints of my work because there were no start up costs involved.I'm working on getting a website up and running ( my dad-in law just happens to do that sort of thing and is doing it for me for free)
so how do you stay safe while still putting enough informaion out there to get sales? even as much as listing your real name and what city you live in , and people can go online and find your address in a couple minutes.

I agree about not putting your address on web, I never have.
I just do the telephone numbers etc and then you can let them contact you that way.

My husband works with the big bussness systems and recommended that,
he says it is never safe to give too much personal info,
Yes they can find some more info but there is certainly more effort to that.
It just doesn't help to worry too much just keep on the safe side.

I only give out my phone # and/or e-mail address.

As for getting your work framed, you are going to have to spend money in order to make money---when you sell a framed work, you'll want to add the framing cost to the value you want from it.

There are many ways to price artwork.  I work in pastel and in different sizes.  Each size has a different value I wish to profit from (how much I value the size of artwork).  Then I add an estimated materials price (pastels, fixitive, paper, etc..) used in the work.  After I frame it, I include the framing price.  This way the I know I'm not cutting into my profits when paying expenses (materials and framing) on the next piece.  Otherwise, you might spend more money than you are making---that's not a profit---that's a loss.

Agreed, only your name and number. Though it's necessary for some businesses to make their address available easily, but they are large businesses and personal safety should be paramount so don't put your address on your website and be cautious about giving it out...

Don't even put your email in your site. Use an email form like Jotform.com that redirects to you. Check out my site and you'll see that form at the bottom. No info on site for spammers.
