Subject: Selling art created in workshop or class

This concerns copyright. If all members of a class or workshop paint the same painting from a photograph supplied by the teacher, it is my belief that the class members cannot sell those paintings. Other artists to whom I have spoken disagree. Does anyone have any feedback on this subject?
