Does anyone have a home online business? Is it a scam, or can you make money in it? I recently applird at a site and I am $50 poorer. Before I could even finish applying I was called and was being sold about $100 worth of services and i haven't even made any money yet. I refused to give them my credit card number over the phone and I tried to use their site but everytime I try to do anything it's a big UPGRADE NOW!!!! pop up. Is it all a scam or is there real money to be made. I thought It would be extra income so i can have more time to paint and market my artwork but it seems, kind of shady. Can anyone give any advice on how to go about this or am I kidding myself?

It's a shame your first experience has been so unpleasant as there are many reputable online sites for selling art, including eBay. You can get a feel by reading threads on www.wetcanvas.com in the Art Business forum. Dan at www.emptyeasel.com has an ongoing series of reports on many viable online art sites for artists. The Online Visual Artists forum has board devoted to discussion on many of the boards.

One of the chief benefits of forums such as this one is the free exchange of ideas, experiences and wisdom. I think you would be doing the readers here a good deed by sharing the name of the operation that has shaken your confidence in online art sites.

Here are a few to check out: www.imagekind.com; www.ebsq.com; www.boundlessgallery.com; www.absolutearts.com; www.yessy.com; and there are many others you'll find on the links in the paragraph above. Don't despair online selling, it can be a real bonus to your other marketing activities.

Deviantart is free and lets you skip the HTML (Hard To Make Legible) stuff, but it's mostly Naruto and Kingdom Hearts fanbrats that live to see effeminate men making out. I've only seem a handful of 30+ artists there.

Hi Lola......here are some tips that I found....

1. Check the Better Business Bureau in your area and in the area where the business is located.

2. Ask lots of questions. What will you be expected to do? Is it salary or commission? Who will pay you? What is the total cost to you for supplies and equipment?

3. Be wary of wary of overstated claims of product effectiveness, exaggerated claims of potential earnings, and demands that you pay for something before instructions or products are provided.

4. Be wary of personal testimonials that never actually identify the person so that you can't investigate further.

5. Contact your state Attorney General's consumer help line if you believe you've been victimized by a work-at-home scheme.

Found this in a Woman's Day September 2007 issue. These are tips from the Attorney General of the State of New York. They also list some possible at home jobs (with some descriptions) and the websites on where to find them.

Hope this helps!

Hi

I've an online business, it's just my own website to keep me busy but I have seen so many scams - one site, I signed up to get info and never used it. Then I got invoices for about $100 saying that as a member I had to pay! After I got the third one, I emailed them telling them, in no uncertain terms, where to shove their invoice!

To say it bluntly NEVER part with any money, even just a few dollars - no doubt a money-making opportunity, but only for the people that set it up, never the poor individual! Research well and, if it sounds too good to be true it probably is.
