I am writing an artist statement for the first time for my website. I was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers? I googled and read a bunch of articles about artist statements, and this is what I have come up with so far for my first rough draft: My first love in art is watercolor. I love the way it captures the essence of light; the whole luminescence of it. Artists that most inspire me are Monet, for the way he depicts water, and Bob Ross for having fun and being spontaneous. I love to make things that are beautiful and inspireing. I want to paint things that I could not otherwise fully express. I often work with reference photos taken on family outings such as hiking, camping, or fishing. I love images of the pacific Northwest and of friends and family. Portraiture is facinating, trying to capture the essence of a personality on paper. I studied art at U.S. Grant highschool in portland, Oregon, and also at Brigham young university. I continue to study through reading art books, watching art shows and practicing what I have learned.

My personal opinion: you have way too many "I" sentences. I this, I that.... Start with something else besides yourself. Some specifics: This statement is informative and interesting - Artists that most inspire me are Monet, for the way he depicts water, and Bob Ross for having fun and being spontaneous. Your very next sentence is only fluff (and misspelled)- I love to make things that are beautiful and inspireing. Not sure if you see art shows or watch them.

Thanks for the critique. I rewrote it with some help from my husband. here is what I am currently using:

Dawna Morton was raised in Portland, Oregon where she discovered her love of painting at an early age. Her love of family and nature provide the basis for her works. Watercolor is Dawna’s medium of choice. She loves it’s luminosity, which brings her vision of brightening the world and the lives of others forward. Currently residing in Rainier, Oregon with her family she finds much of her inspiration in the forests surrounding their home.

No, I really haven't been to many art shows, and I had never heard of an artist statement at that time. I was so busy looking at the art, I did't notice any statements...
