The word giclee came about as a way to not use digital print, or computer-generated print, or other terms that in 1990 were sure to hamper sales of this new media being introduced to the art market. Back then, there was no Internet, no ubiquitous cell phone w/digital camera attached, no Wintel Dell dynasties, no iPods, and desktop publishing was in its infancy. So comng up with a French word to make the IRIS prints of the day sound more exotic, giclee was put into usage. If you want to read the most accurate telling of the origin of the usage, go to the thread titled, What Is a Giclee, in this topic.
My most recent Art Print Issues blog post titled Is Giclee Passe? has far and away had more visitors, comments and page views of any since I started it in February. Essentially, I am questioning whether the use of giclee is necessary or even a good thing for artists to continue to use. |
