I posted today on my www.artprintissues.com blog on the same subject as the title of this thread. The point is that there are few, if any, good reasons to limit digital fine art reproductions. In fact, there are numerous good reasons to keep editions open.
Chiefly, artists can make more money with open editions than with limited editions. Artists can supply their buyers with the size they want rather than being forced to buy a size not suitable for their needs. You offset the unspoken lingering doubt whether a piece is being sold beyond the stated edition size. With the recent conviction of a giclee printer and art promoter husband and wife team who sold $20 million of bogus limited editions and bilked artists as well as buyers, who needs the doubt. (I have a post on that event in the April archives.) Give them what they want and avoid and controversy, make your life easier in the process.
It's more complex than I am stating here, but I truly believe most artists will make more money with less hassle in the open edition market than in the limited edition market. Read my post to get more details. Your opinion and comments are valued. |
