Is it legal or permissible to use the word copyright or logo on your work without  registering your work.

My understanding is that if you someone copies your work, whether it be copyrighted or not. It is up to the artist him/herself to handle the problem. It which case you may have to be a rich artist to win your case.

You can put a copyright mark on your work without registering it. You don't have the same protection without registering your work.  To learn more you can go to www.copyright.gov, which is the official US government site. Another good site is NOLO. It offers some good free information and some very affordable information on copyrights.

Thank you bjdavey.
You are a wealth of information. It does clarify a lot for me. I also heard that, if you take a photo and put all the pertinent information, "such a your signature the date of completion etc", then you send it registered mail to yourself. You keep this sealed envelope on a file so that if the need arises that you have proof. It is said that as long at the date of the registered seal is untouch that it will be like a copyright registery. I do not know if this it valid or not. It is just something I heard in the wind. I do suppose for sale perposes that it is better to have it registered properly.

I'm not a copyright attorney, but my understanding is you have copyright protection merely by creating something. I also believe it to be true that without registering your copyright, you can only sue to cease and desist and not for damages. Check the references I gave you to find out if this is correct.

The way I see it is if a piece is worth spending money to defend its copyright, it is easily worth the money to copyright it in the first place. Further, while copyrighting is a problem, an admitted serious problem for some artists, gaining enough sales to grab the attention of would-be copyright thieves is far more important.
