I am a new member to this site. I need to ask, I have three websites and I know which paintings are getting hits, but noone contacts me. How do I get people to contact me when they visit? Second,What terms do I put in my sales contract and certificate of authencity to protect my rights?

Also lastly how do you get a gallery to show your work, when they only want artists who will sell? can someone answer these questions.

Welcome to the site!

It would help if we could see your sites to give you a better answer, but I'll give you some general info, hope it helps. First, I am assuming that you have both your direct e-mail address and phone number on your site and instructions for interested buyers to contact you directly if they are interested in purchasing your work. I don't know your location (Northeast, West, the south, etc.) or where your studio is, but if you have an appropriate studio space to show work to the public, you can also offer interested clients to visit the studio either by appointment or set up regular hours when the studio is open to the public.

For an artist to sell their work off their own website is pretty rare, it does happen, but every artist I know, including self representing artists who are not affiliated with a gallery (and some are big sellers with national reputations), almost never sell off their site, people who are willing to pay a decent price for an artists work want to see it "live", meet the artist, etc. Have you tried the e-Bay route?

A sales contract should include the basics of what a person buys: title, dimensions, medium, price, date of purchase. If you want to include some type of guarantee regarding the work, that's up to you and I would speak to an expert before including this type of verbiage. When you sell a work, the buyer can do anything they want with it - hang it on the wall, resell it for a higher price, or burn it (!), because they now own it. It sounds like you are concernced that they will reproduce it, if you work is very popular and this is a serious concern, consult with an expert (copyright lawyer) on this topic. certificates of authenticity only verify that the work the patron purchased is an original of yours and not a copy. Samples are available on the internet.

Galleries - they are businesses, pure and simple. Reputable gallieries invest a considerable amount of time and money in any artist they represent (hence the standard 50/50 split with the artist). So regardless of how great your art may be, if it does not sell, they are not interested because they will not recoup the investment they made in you. Also, make sure you are choosing the right galleries for your work. If you are an abstract artist, target galleries that deal in emerging abstract artists, not established abstract artists.

Some suggestions ( I don't know your work, so I'm not sure if any are applicable) to help you sell and get your name out there: enter shows, preferably juried; join a local art league, they usually have regular shows of members work; consider e-bay if your prices are in line with what is selling on that site; consider art fairs where you can set up your own booth; and above all, network like crazy and make it easy for people to see and buy your work.

well my web sites are; The main one is www.art-websites.com/douglassandler
the second one is http://sandlertheartist.tripod.com
the third is my european one http://members.lycos.co.uk/dougsandler67

the european one was so I can introduce my art there. they are all free except the first one. I do not want to surrender rights to the painting, i do not want anyone except a agent or gallery or me to make any money on it. I know that once a person buys the art, its thers. I do not have and cannot afford a lawyer. I want to get shows so people can see my art. I want to be sure anything I sell goes to a good home.

If you sell a painting what do you add? I want to have sales, but I do not want to be taken advantage of. i live in panama city, fl and I do not have a studio, just a closet size space in my kitchen. any further infomation would be appreciated. I have some new paintings I plan on posting.

Here's a link to some information I think you will find very helpful, it gives a lot of information regarding artists / galleries / sales. The articles are written by an art consultant. There are several other articles on the site that I've found to be very helpful.

From I understand, if you sign your work it constitutes a copywrite you own it. No one can reproduce your work without your permission.
