01/08/2007 3:27 PM Alert

Hi!  Boy am I nervous -- I feel like I am standing infront of a hundred people.  (Little do I know that it is probably thousands!)  Anyway, I have been painting on my own for almost two years now.  Other than taking a direct distance course in art and a straight A background in art, I am very new. but, here's the clincher , I am old at 52!

I would like to submit some of my work -- acrylic and now oil these past two months.   But, it is kind of like jumping off a cliff!  Does anyone else know how this feels to be starting to show what  their work is like?

I have a question. My husband and I went to Hawaii  a year ago.  With his 35 mm camera, my husband took lots of scenic pictures.  Now, I am feeling confident enough to paint some of these.  I have been hearing that you should only use photos for reference and put changes in them.  But, I want my painting to reflect "Honolulu" beach and the top of "Diamond Head" so that my audience will realize  what they're seeing.  If I were to change what is in the picture too much then I am not painting the scene.

Will try and find on my computer my painting of a "View from Diamond Head" and send it in.  Thanks for reading!   Alias

Don't be nervus, I am 52 and have never taken an art course. I am learning on my own and through looking at this site. reading info on the net. thats about it. I started painting as a hobby in 2000 and now I am starting to do portraits. My work is amateur, but i love doing it and I think that is all that matters. So enjoy! and do it because you love doing it.

Hi - I am a 68 year old photographer who started painting 10 years ago, because outdoor Art Shows didn't consider photography as Art. I started by hand-coloring my BW  in-house printed photos, and once I learned the names of oil colors and didn't have to rely on John Marshall Photo Oil colors, such as Tree Green, and Sky Blue, I took a class at the DuPage Art League in Wheaton IL. After one class I decided that I did not like turpintine, so I started painting with a knife, in the wet-on-wet method.

Now I can sit in  my MI home, look out at the snow drifts and paint beautiful Lake Michigan beach scenes. I kind of use some of my photos (and they are beautiful) as guides, maybe combine a few, simplfy mostly, and have fun. I intend to do Plein Aire Painting as soon as it warms up a little, and am looking for fellow painters in western Michigan to paint with this spring and summerl

I have sold some originals, still don't like to pedal my own art, even after pedaling my photos at stores and outdoor shows for 10 years. I used to have my late husband sell at the outdoor shows, after I helped by organizing, entering, loading & unloading my work, I then would sit behind the tent. If I heard him mention me, I would stick my head out and say hi ! Since he passed away, I no longer do shows, but still have the equipment, hoping to join up with a group and do a co-op. Janet

PS: I do have my own website after paying a fortune to EBAY !

Hi Janet..........Where do you live in West Michigan? I am from Grand Rapids. There are so many really good painters in this city. Do you live nearby? There are a few very good art groups to join. Good luck.

Hi Alias,
If you take your own photos you can paint them any way that you like, even exactly as they are, they are your photos. Taking artistic license on your own photos is eliminating distracting things from the photo as you paint, or emphasizing what you want to focus on, balancing out the composition. Everyone is nervous at first, but here on the forum you will find everyone very helpful in giving you tips on how to improve. This forum is quite addictive, seeing all the lovely works here at different stages of progress, and watching beginning artists improve quite quickly. Please don't hesitate to post your work here. Happy painting.

If you are having trouble uploading photos of your work, go to the FAQ section and it will tell you how. Just make sure they are in JPG format and 100kb or under in size, and measurements are approx 3"x5" or a little smaller.

Good for you!!
I'm older than you but since I started visiting the site, I've learned quite a bit and have found people to be supportive and helpful.
I've posted work and have gotten suggestions.
It's really interesting to hear other people's perspectives.... from all over the world and with all different types of experience and life experiences.

Hope to continue hearing from you whenever I find the time to "drop in".

Open the appropriate section i.e. Acrylic or Oil, "Add New Topic" in that section put in your text describing your work, then down below there is the browse button where you can search your files for the photo of your work, then press submit.

Hey,

I would guess that you can not help but feel funny posting your own art work, even if your rational mind tells you not to (that being how emotions are). Sometimes ya just have to take the jump, and the way your talking here, it might be that your trying to jump, and trying to jump, and the web site won't let you post! I say that because I have yet to post a single picture here because the site will not, thus far, let me. (although I may have solved that, at long, long last, today .... we shall see).

One thing you might try, to get past some of the fear of posting a finished work, is to by pass the 'finished' part. For example, you might post the photo you mentioned, then post the first few marks on your drawing or painting of that photo, showing how you start it. Them when you add the first color, take another picture and post that. Keep on doing that and watch for suggestions people have along the way.

HI everyone! It's me again. I tried for hours to post my work. I got "picasa" but I couldn't figure out what to do with it! Lame on the computer I am afraid. Anyway, I will have my 23 year old daughter help me out in about a week. She should be able to figure it out. Just have to be patient!

Yesterday I purchased four oil water mixable paints and will be using them.

Any of the forum tried them? I think they could be wonderful "cause they clean up better than acrylics and go on like oils. Now to paint!! -- alias

I was looking at this page again today and pointing it out to my wife as yet another person who can't post a picture. She hit the nail on the head when she said “that web site is created by a “wanna-be” web developer!” The point is, don't feel bad about not being able to post ....... there are a LOT of people having problems in that department with respect to this web site.

At long last, have figured a way that I can post, although it seems not to work for some others. I do not use Microsoft for anything, but instead run Linux ...... and part of the problem seems to be that the site doesn't grasp Linux systems to well even though half the net is run on Linux! (They would do well to run their site on Linux for the very reason that it understands other operating systems, unlike the bulk of Microsoft which tends to understand only Microsoft .... it is why places like Google and Wikipedia use it!).

Here is the way I have done it:

First, I went over to “yahoo photos”, opened an account, which is easy, and uploaded my pictures to that account (its free). The photos where already of the proper size (less than 100K) and proper form (jpg and/or tiff). Once uploaded, I downloaded them back to my computer (I know that seems stupid, but it works for me).

Then I come to this web site and go to the place where you create your post. Once that is loaded, I page down to the bottom of the thing where there are tabs, on for the page that is open, and one that says “html”. I click on the html tab.

Once that is opened, I page down to the the “browse” button (which on some computers goes by a different name). I click it and up comes a list of files on my computer ..... i pick the file having the pictures I downloaded from yahoo photos. I then hit 'submit' before I write anything, and before I title it. This gives an error message that I did not fill in subject, or write anything ...... if the picture uploaded, then there is no error message above the browse button .... if it did not upload correctly, there is an error message above the browse button. For me, as a rule, if the size is correct AND I ran the photos through yahoo first, THEN I get no error message for the picture upload. If I have no error, I then fill in a title and what writing I add, then submit, and it works.

I can not tell you that method will work for you, only that it has worked, thus far, for me. If all else fails, you might try it.
