A lady has asked me to paint her daughters atop their horses they ride daily. I have told her that I am not a portraitist. She said that's OK and wondered if I could just capture their likeness...which I can. However, then she came back and asked me how much it would cost and the time it would take to do their portraits ontop of the horses. I have NO idea how to price something I've never done! Any ideas on how to be upfront with her without her losing respect for my abilities? I don't want to downplay my talent, but I don't want to say I can deliver something that I might not be able to do. Thanks.

What size of a painting does she want ? , take the price you normally put on a painting that size and adjust for two horses and two people and any other things that she might want and go from there .
Have a clear discussion with the client , and make sure that both know exactly what the deal , price and time frame is and then get it on paper , signed and witnessed.
If she wants changes later or wants to add something tell her the price to do that, if she is agreeable add it to the contract and have her sign it.
If you think you can't deliver but would like to try , then be upfront and perhaps say you will do it and if she is not satisfied with the likeness she doesn't have to buy the painting, but You keep the painting to sell elsewhere , keep or ?
