I would like to try adding a new dimension to my pastel paintings by using alcohol. But what kind of alcohol? I have rubbing alcohol but it has water in it and when I read an article about using alcohol it said I could use the alcohol on Canson Mi-Tientes paper. |

| I am running across this just now and you peak my interest, so I must ask what will alcohol do for you regarding a pastel painting. Have not heard of this before. Best wishes! Pejj |

Hi Hank and Peji,
I just became aware of the use of alcohol with Pastels as well. I talked to an artist from Prescott AZ who lays in the distance and then washes with alcohol. He then finishes the foreground. It produces a wonderful hazy look. See his website http://web.mac.com/donran/iWeb/Don%20Rantz%20Fine%20Art/Home.html.
Unfortunately, when he said he washes with alcohol I didn't think to ask him what percent. Barbara |

I am both new to this site and to pastels. However, I remember reading an article in the Pastel Journal about using rubbing alcohol in doing an underpainting. And since it is alcohol, it melts the pastel pigment into the tooth of the support allowing you to add more layers of pastel; while not causing the support (Cason Mi-Tientes Pastel Paper) to buckle.
I have tried it a couple of times and I am still learning, but you can add four or five more layers of pastel on top of the underpainting.

| A lot of people use alcohol or some use oil paint with mineral spirits... but you do need the right paper, not all pastel papers can take the wetness well... u may want to go to Dakota Pastels art supplies for different types of pastel papers, personally I use Wallis sanded paper the most and then Uart sanded.... I don't always use a wash underpainting sometimes I just use pan pastels to set the base... or nothing... |
