hi everyone,
my name is Sandi...i live in Nova scotia Canada...and i am about to embark upon a new watercolor....the subject matter is seashells and starfish ,stones etc..that you would find laying flat on the sand..but with water washing over them. I was thinking of using large salt for effect . Does anyone here have experience rendering sand with a thin gauze of water over top? In my mind, i know just how i'd like it to look, but i want to see if anyone has any ideas or ways to go about it...it would be a great help. Thank you for your input in advance.

Keep in mind, Sandi, that a thin layer of water over sand will not have much inherent color. What you will see is a reflection of the sky. I would paint in the sand first, then, when that's dry, do a glaze that reflects the sky and/or clouds--whatever the water would be reflecting.

Using salt to texture the sand works best with strong colors, so that you'll see the effect. What sprinkling salt over wet paint does is that it draws the water and the accompanying paint toward it, where it dries, leaving a mottled appearance. Once dry, the salt can be either brushed off the paper or left in place (try it both ways to see what provides the affect you want. The size and type of salt you choose will affect the final appearance, so experiment with that, too. Also, some paints stain more than others, so you'll want to practice with a variety of the colors you might want to incorporate. Don't try to glaze after you've salted, though. Any salt should go on while your final glaze of color is still quite wet.
