Can anyone tell me if it is necessary to varnish an acrylic painting after it is finished? I have done this with oils, but can't seem to find information about doing it with acrylics. If so, what would you suggest using?

Thanks.

From what I've read, acrylics that won't be framed behind glass should have a varnish applied to them. As it dries, acrylics develop a porous surface that allows dirt and grime to penetrate. Applying a varnish will seal the surface, allowing for cleaning the painting. You can varnish with a product like Liquitex's Gloss (or Matte) Medium and Varnish for a permanent sealant. Some things I've read suggest using a removable varnish like Golden's Archival MSA spray so that future conservators can strip the varnish down to the original paint layer.

Same place you buy your paint sells acrylic matte or gloss acrylic varnish (medium)
