I have only been paitn for like a year and I have done 2 paintings in this time, my most recent I ouwld like to make prints of but I am not sure how to go about this. I have read about archival watercolor paper and such. Does anyone have any recomendations on how to get this done, where and how much it costs? Oh and also comment on what type of papers to print on.

Thank you in advance

Jared,

You should look to find a giclee printing service in your area. It's best to go with a local shop for ease of taking your artwork to them and for checking proofs. If there isn't one in your area, you can work with an on-line service. They can be a bit difficult to find because there doesn't seem to be a category in the yellow pages for this service. Check with other artists, art associations, and galleries in your area for recommendations.

Pricing seems to vary widely from place to place, so be sure you understand all of the charges from image capture, to color proofing, and on to printing cost. In case you haven't seen it, there was a good article in this month's edition of The Artist's Magazine on giclees and it provides a lot of excellent information on questions you should be sure to ask of the giclee printers you will talk to.

As for papers to print on, I'd recommend picking one that matches the character of your original art substrate as closely as possible. If it's on canvas, pick a canvas that has a similar feel and look. Ask to see examples of a canvas that has had a protective coating applied to it so that you can see what the finished product will look like. Papers come in a wide variety of weights and textures, and have varying degrees of whiteness. Pick one that you think will best match your artwork. Make sure that its' an archival product, typically a cotton rag paper. Remember, too, that the texture in your original work will be captured by the camera or scanner and will end up being printed on the paper.

Good luck.
