03/20/2008 7:06 PM Alert

i have several pieces done on 8 x 10 clay- and aqua- board. i don't want to frame them and am wondering if anyone has experience (or ideas) on how else to make them hang- able.

i just can't visualize any type of frame that wouldn't detract from the work- partially because they are fairly small. and partly because i usually work on box canvas & am not used to framing anything!

thanks for your help-

I'm not sure if this will help or not...

I do a lot of assemblage work and then use
a piece of plexiglass - no frame - over it.
And we've mounted it using the "J" glass
hangers:

     art  ||
       w  ||         |
       o  ||          |
        r  ||         |
   _   k  ||         |
  /     edge       | the wall
 ================================== (end of J hanger)
                     |
                     |
view from above.

The idea is to trap the edge with one of these
nailed in just below the edge so that the "cup"
of the J covers the art work.

These are rather sharp on the end that holds the
flat in and if not careful will def scratch the
surface. You could use some sponge foam or a
hard rubber "dot" to place between it and the
surface. Mouting anything that looks that delicate
is almost always a nightmare.

I've only used this in gallery hanging and
don't know how it would hold up in someone's
collection.

i;ll post this and hopefully the diagram above
will show up correctly.

For my paintings on board I use foam core board as a backing. You can back the whole board or just put a strip at the top. I cut it at an angle so it catches the nail, or cut a hole in it if backing the whole thing. It's pretty cheap and low tech. If you find something else that works, please share.

I honestly think a simple, black frame would help unify and set off those pieces. Give it a shot. You're not welding it on.
