Just watched a video on About.com where the washes were graduated on the palette and worked quickly to allow for scratching out with a pointed but not sharp brush tip. Then some opaques of light values and even deeper tones were added for effect. I have done a similiar technique for fine grasses and whiskers/fine furs with acrylics allowing the under color to peak out through the scratched lines, I detail thick, bushy furs with a rake brush and acrylic thinned with Blending medium to retain color depth.
